Texas is divided into counties and the City of San Antonio is located in Bexar County or as we locals
call it - Bear County. Bexar County is the 4th largest county in Texas and the 19th largest
county nationally. Additionally, it is the 17th most populous county in the nation. Bexar County
covers 1256 square miles and was named for San Antonio de Bexar.
On December 29th, 1845 Texas joined the union and became a state. Texas then divided the state into
129 separate counties and at that time Bexar County came into being.. Together the city of San Antonio
and the county of Bexar have a tremendously rich history with the missions, etc. The Bexar County
courthouse was completed in 1892 and serves as the county seat. The building is a national history
landmark and is located in the downtown area.
Bexar County government is admistered by a County Judge and 4 County Commissioners.
Bexar County created our nation's first digital library the Biblio in 2014.
