I am very appreciative of my former occupation and training as a Complaint & Grievance Specialist in the Medical Assistance, Drug & Alcohol and Mental Health arenas prior to getting into the real estate game. My main role was to resolve an issue or complaint within a 30 day period, which in reality was difficult to do especially with people who had life altering problems. This line of work will make you humble. I got to learn a great deal of how to handle people in crisis, irate people, sexual predators, etc. However, the greatest asset that I had gained from doing this line of work was going to a training course in cultural competence.
Cultural Competence is the development of skills by individuals and systems to live and work with, educate and serve diverse individuals and communities. It is the willingness and ability of a system to value the importance of culture in the delivery of services to all segments of the population.
We often expect our medical providers to have experience in cultural competence and our educational institutions to have experience with cultural competence, however does it exist in the real estate industry?
I asked this question because I recently attended several community events throughout Pennsylvania which were quite diverse. (Latino, Asian, Russian, etc.) These were educational programs for learning about purchasing homes and the process of obtaining a loan. During the presentations at some of the events, the information was geared towards the audience in such a way that it promoted an awareness of the cultural presence, however they lack the sensitivity. Some of the speakers refused to answer questions because they could not understand what was being asked of them and others would evade the matter by changing the subject. I was shocked that none of the speakers had translators present to assist in helping the diverse groups.
It was very troubling to me and I found myself questioning if cultural competence exist in the real estate industry? Have you found yourself asking this same question?
