There's No App For That!

Real Estate Agent with Big Block Realty 858.232.8722 CA BRE# 01261476

Over 80% of new Realtors today, will never renew their license in 4 years (CA) and almost 75% of them quit in year one (per NAR & Trulia). Why?  Most never owned a business, this is a business, not a job. Very few came from a direct sales background, this is a direct sales industry and there's no APP for that.

It's 2016 and a digital world, but you better have people skills and use them, real estate is a contact sport not easily won behind a computer or smart phone. Social skills & care, there's no APP for that.

The public loves it's Realtor-free access to Zillow, despite it's inaccurate stats & info and it's #1 purpose being to capture the public's info and sell it to Realtors & lenders. Accurate home values and building real relationships, there's no APP for that.

Many HGTV viewers watch a couple shows and suddenly are experts and challenging our years of experience in the trenches. They will own statistically, 1-7 homes in their life vs. we who sell 1-7 properties per month (or more); experience, competence & character, there's no APP for that.

Good listing agents perform over 180 individual tasks & jobs from start to close, (documented) to get a home sold. (Oh an trust me, they are working on a APP for that!) But that assumes a perfect world scenario, free of issues and surprises. Solving problems and keeping you out of court, there's no APP for that.

Many of us  survived the worst real estate market and recession in our lifetime 2006-2011, the 2nd worst in American history; we're still in business and better for it, because of our skills & ability to adapt and overcome-the never quit attitude, (even when that "Great Depreciation-tunnel" was very, very, dark). Tenacity, creativity and bravery in the face of uncertainty ; there's no APP for that.

Emotional Intelligence over knee jerk reactions - somehow keeping the "it's the principle of the matter" ranting clients' needs, in front of our own; (with a "cooler heads prevail" skills-set) that closes deals despite the conflicts; There's no APP for that.

There's no App for what I do I'm a Realtor, we are sales agents in an ever changing industry that "appears so easy from the outside looking in"; there's no APP to market with our expertise, no APP to negotiate with our skills and there's no APP to hold emotional clients' hands through the average transaction and all the challenges transactions throw at us..AND there's always problems, because it's real estate and it's people.

Did I mention, long after you close escrow, I still stay in touch, with calls, e-mail, notes & pop-bys, items of value and party invitations? Yeah, staying in touch with personalized service, there's no APP for that either!

I'm your Realtor. There's no App for me, there never can be.

Good morning Thomas.  This is good enough to send to our agents.  That may sound like a left-handed comment but meant to be  really be positive.  Our agents have enough to do, so I only send the best thoughts to them, and this is one.

What a great visual, Thomas J. Nelson, Realtor ... and a great message.  Still chuckling over the "what my Mom thinks I do" pic above.  So very true ...

This is a post that all new agent should read, and perhaps many others as well. It's so easy these days to come into the business, surrounded by technology, online marketing, gadgets, and more, and get caught up in it all and lose sight of what the business is really all about, and what you have to do to be successful.

I love the visual - it makes a great statement!

A beautiful post, and all so very true. If would-be agents knew what they were getting into, my guess is their numbers would be cut by 90% - which is probably why real estate schools and licensing agencies aren't about to share the secret!

I heard someone at Inman Connect on the Road point out that an agent is "responsible" for the home long after it's sold; yet no one ever considers the car salesman responsible for the car they sold us 8 months ago. I'm willing to bet selling cars is maybe a few set of steps as well.

In the meantime, there has to be joy in this, otherwise time to deactivate the license.

Amen!  Well put and I love the graphic at the top.  So true!  It is interesting how the HGTV and other channel flipping shows have changed things.  It used to be you would never need to stage a vacant house, now even with a "traditional" floorplan people have a hard time picturing it with furniture.  It's almost a requirement to stage homes now.

I only ever hired one who quit after 3 years.  I was very surprised because I thought they would be great at it.

Great read Thomas J. Nelson, Realtor ... Indeed, there is no app that will ever replace a living breathing agent. And as one in the industry for 30+ years, I've worked with a lot of agents. The one's that do it right, worked the gig to the best of their ability, and took care of their clients are happily still around! Congrats on the feature!

If a private company sold licenses and training to this many people that they knew would fail the govt would come in, call them a scam and likely throw them in prison.

But when the states and assns are doing it...
