This week as I wrap up another flip house, I am reminded of how inexpensive energy efficiencies really are. My window package alone barely broke a grand. Granted, this is a very small house. But that's sort of the point. Even old, affordable, small houses can be efficient. What can you do to see if your home could use some energy saving action?
1. HOLD A CANDLE TO THE WIND -- If you hold a candle to the windows, doors, fixtures and any other vents, pipes or openings and the smoke blows, you have a leak. Common ways to resolve the problem include caulk, insulation, weather stripping.
2. DUCT TAPE -- If you can inspect your ducts, see if there are holes or missing insulation around the ducts. Poorly maintained or insulated ducts can lose up to 30% of the energy in the home.
3. GET OUT YOUR TAPE MEASURE -- If you measure your insulation and check an online insulation calculator, you may find you are low. It's not limbo, here, get some more insulation in those low spaces.
There are plenty of other things you can do to make your space more energy efficient, like radiant barrier, new windows or a whole new green house. But this week I am reminded there are plenty of quick and easy things anyone can do on any budget and maybe if you do those quick and easy things, you will save enough money for that Green Certified new home in your dreams!
