Rules of House Painting

Whether you hire a pro, or do-it-yourself, there are a strict set of rules to follow when painting the outside of your house.  A fresh coat of paint can transform a home but it’s also something you don’t want to have to do again in a few years.  So doing it right is crucial.  I came across some valuable tips at usnews.com

DON’T SKIMP

Buying top-quality paint is the key since it lasts longer.  Don’t skimp on primer or caulking either. High-quality exterior paint typically costs from $35 to $40 per gallon, up to $70. Be sure to choose 100 percent acrylic paint. Also, make sure the paint has a lifetime warranty against defects in the finish. Don’t skim on the coats of paint, as well.

When it comes to using the right tools, don’t skimp on those either. A high-quality brush, roller and, for some houses, an airless sprayer are necessities.

DO PREP WORK

Before painting, you’ll want to make sure the surface is clean, dry, and not flaking or peeling.  This might mean extensive scraping and sanding. To begin, wash the surfaces, then remove loose paint, and finally use a putty knife and wood filler to fill cracks and holes.  Let the filler dry and then sand these areas again.  Brush off all of the dust, caulk the joints, and allow the caulk to dry before applying primer.

BEWARE OF LEAD PAINT

House paint today does not contain lead.  But paint applied before 1978 most likely does. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency warns any home improvement work around lead paint can be hazardous to your health. For lead testing and removal, the EPA recommends you contact local lead-safe certified renovation contractors.

WAIT FOR THE RIGHT WEATHER

Don’t paint in the hot weather, in the rain, or during windy or dusty days. Ideal temperatures for painting are between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Hot weather causes the paint to dry too quickly, as does direct sun.

COVER EVERYTHING

Protect decks, shrubs, patios, and walkways from paint spills with drop clothes or plastic sheeting. If you use an airless paint sprayer, masking and covering will be absolutely necessary.

GET BIDS AND REFERENCES IF YOU HIRE A PRO

Request detailed bids from at least three painting contractors, and ask them for the names and phone numbers of satisfied customers.

Hi Jennifer Wilson great points. I've painted my home, inside and out and it's not hard, but does take the right preparation, tools and materials.  Very satisfying when it's done too!

I once heard the Dalai Lama say, I think. Let yourself learn the right way so you can break the rules on purpose once you do and be truly creative

I think my friend told me that from the Dalai Lama, just in case I misquoted. I'm pretty sure you got the idea
