Albert was born in Peru, Indiana to Samuel and Kate. He was the only surviving child of the family. By the age of 6 he had learned to play the violin, the piano at 8 and he wrote his first operetta at 10. His grandfather James, was the richest man in Indiana. James wanted Albert to become a lawyer so he sent him to Worcester Academy in Massachusetts in 1905. He graduated valedictorian and entered Yale University in 1909 to study law. Law did not really work out with Albert so he majored in English, minored in music and also studied French. In his senior year he was elected president of the Yale Glee Club.
During WWI where he was in the French Foreign Legion. His portrait is displayed at their museum in Aubagne. In 1918 he met Linda and the next year they were married. They remained together until her death in 1954. Wayne Martin I’m trying to give you a lot of hints today…. Albert died of kidney failure in 1964 in Santa Monica, California at 73.
So if you haven’t figured it out by now I’m writing about Cole Albert Porter, better known as Cole Porter. His most successful musical was “Kiss Me Kate, it won the first Tony Award for Best Musical. There are so many others I truly don’t have enough space to write about them all. He wrote songs for over 36 stage musicals. You can find a complete list of his works in the Library of Congress. Impressive don’t you think?
