Most of us can recite the Golden Rule. And it is a good rule to live by. However, we must look deeper at how it is applied.
It is so important that everything in the world does not become about us.
The Golden Rule is not about assuming that everything you know and like and want is what everyone else knows, likes and wants.
This is where the Platinum Rule comes into play.
The Platinum Rule says: "Do unto others as they would have you do unto them, not as you would have them do unto you."
This is simply acknowledging that we all have different interests and likes.
For instance: You are a demonstrative person and you like to hug and shake hands. So you would take the Golden Rule as your guide and you would hug and shake hands with everyone.
Now we have become aware that many people today do NOT want to be hugged or have their hand shook. This is where we apply the Platinum Rule:
"Do unto others as they would have you do unto them, not as you would have them do unto you."
I believe that by applying both the Golden Rule and the Platinum Rule we will have a good balance in dealing with other in positive way.
