Ok what can you do with an outdated and very large old beer brewery that is no longer being used. In San Antonio the answer is quite clear you make it an Alamo city art mecca. In San Antonio creativity reigns. The building was originally constructed between 1895 and 1904 with E. Jungenfeld and Co serving as the architects. But this magnificent old building has been beautifully updated and now houses the San Antonio Art Museum. The building sits overlooking the bank of the San Antonio River.

I must admit when the San Antonio Art Museum first opened I was impressed by the renovation but less impressed with the art collection it housed. The glass elevators particularly entranced me. But for me that view changed long ago. There were a number of blockbuster art shows that came and then Nelson Rockefeller left his vast and impressive collection of pre-Columbian art to the San Antonio Art Museum. Soon other important collectors followed suite. Now the building is a glorious showcase for many special works of art with wonderful collections of Asian, Irish Silver, Wedgewood, American paintings, all types of South American art, Mr. Rockefeller'spre-Columbian collection, Greek and Roman antiquities and a host of other museum masterpieces.

The building remains a unique, beautiful place and with the River Walk Museum Reach it is a charming 30 minute stroll from much of downtown.
