Buy Less Stuff! Tip of the day to help save the earth!

By
Real Estate Agent with Windermere Real Estate

This one will help your bottom line as well as the earth!!

Buy less stuff.  New products require the destruction of trees, the use of petroleum for plastics, shipping, packaging…our incessant chain of production and consumption is one of the great threats to the sustainability of our planet. Can you use that sweater another year?  Maybe you could swap some furniture items with a friend. Perhaps you can you get something on Craig’s List rather than at Toys-R-Us?

As always - Feel free to comment with any questions, or anything to add!

Yes, I think the good thing about the slow economy is people realize they really can do without the constant search for more stuff

Boy, you really hit the nail on the head with this post. Most of the people in financial difficulty can attribute it directly to stuff. Stuff they don't need or really even want. Eventually it all turns into waste and takes up rapidly shrinking space. Good post.

One of the ways I "Buy Less Stuff" is to think of the extended life of anything I buy. For example, a radio. When I was in my 20's I could only afford a small portable stereo. But I didn't want to buy some cheap piece of garbage that wouldn't work in 2 years. So Instead, I tried to focus on something that could later be used for different purposes. So I bought a stereo witha small footprint that was light and had both CD & Tape playing abilities. Once I bought a bigger stereo, this small unit became my office radio. I still have it some 15 years later and it is now my radio for my work out room.

No matter what it is we bring home, sooner or later it ends up in the landfill - that's a scary thought. Here on an island we are especially aware of the limitations of that.

Buying less stuff is always great advice. I also really like the idea of reuse of the radio/cd player in a different capacity. We own a 5th wheel travel trailer which we bought thinking we would travel when we retire. Probably not going to retire any time soon but my old laptop now is the traveling computer and fits nicely into the space built into the RV for it--useful enough for checking email on the road even if I would never try to do a CMA on it give that it is five years old and slow as molassess compared to what I use now.

The other reason for the fifth wheel actually was inspired by a friend who found himself homeless after a divorce. After two really bad rental experiences and sleeping on friends floors he vowed never to be homeless again for any reason--he bought a used fifth wheel and moved into it knowing that he had his own home now no matter what circumstance come up in his life. That's a comforting thought. You can take your home with you wherever you go, it's small so easy to heat and cool (they are well insulated these days, unlike the early versions) There is a whole full time lifestyle out there that peope who deal in Resort properties are probably aware of because in some communities people own a lot and rent it to others when they travel much as you would do with a condo.

Many people are not driving their RV's much because of gas prices but these slf contained untis can be very efficient  especially for full timers who often stay in one place for several months at a time. They certainly use less resouces than flying to a lake resort for example and staying in a hotel

You could not have said it better. Buy less and throw away less. As consumers we need to make good judgments about the quality and the quantity of items we purchase.
