Thanks for stopping by and taking time out of your day to read my post. My intent is to put a smile on your face. Hopefully you’ll go away with some information you may have forgotten about or did not know. Now sit back and enjoy the post for the day.

Caleb was born in Onondaga County, New York back in 1811. He attended the Chittenango polytechnic institute. He worked as a farmer until 1838, he was an active abolitionist. He became the secretary to the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society from 1840 to 1844. He bought the abolitionist newspaper “Albany Patriot” and wrote for it until in 1847 due to failing health he was forced to retire.

After being forced to retire due to his ill health he focused on getting better. He went to a spa and saw a remarkable recovery after taking a “water cure”. Due to his recovery he became an advocate for hydropath. He took training to become a physician and opened a hydropathic institute in Cortland County, New York. He took over “Our Home Hygienic Institute” at Dansville, New York. During his tenure there he removed red meat, coffee, alcohol and tobacco from being permitted on the premises. If you haven’t figured it out by now I’m writing about James Caleb Jackson. He was an advocate for fresh fruits and vegetables. He died in 1895 at 84. However, can you tell me what he will be noted for in the history books? Why he was the inventor of the first dry whole grain breakfast cereal, which he called granula.

James Dray So you are telling us that Kellogg was a follower of Caleb Jackson's prescription for a grain diet. As others have stated, that diet is noting new as grains have been a stable diet for so many cultures for thousands of years, yet it is interesting how people seem to go full circle to 'discover' this diet, it seems with each new generation. Thanks for the biography!

James- I have to echo what Sally K. & David L. Hanson said.  Who'd have thought that breakfast cereal had to be invented!

Good morning James. He live a pretty long time for that era. He certainly practiced what he preached about the foods he consumed.

That is certainly a big change in his life - from retired in his 30s due to ill health to a physician and living into his 80s because of his turn around in healthy activities and good diet

Good morning, James Dray as I was scanning through your posts, the name Caleb caught my eye.... not because of the fruits and veggie story, but because that the name of my first great grandson who was born yesterday afternoon!!!  Caleb Ryan is HIS name....

Interesting how James Caleb Jackson found a nutritional and healthy way to personal wellness - fruits, vegetables, and grains. Even though I am not a dry cereal fan, I am well aware I am outnumbered on this. Still remember when cleaning up the breakfast table, soggy cereal left in bowls. Yuck...
