When There is a Death in the Family

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

I'm sure we real estate agents in Sacramento and elsewhere around the country could fill up a book with stories about what happens among our clients when there is a death in the family. The in-fighting and backstabbing can be surreal. The one place, though, that I did not expect to see this sort of thing was in my own family in Minneapolis, but no idea why I would think we're special or exempt from this.

We're not any different.

In fact, when I paused to reflect, there was more that came up. You can read about this in my personal blog today at this link: The Evil Side Lurking After a Death in the Family.

Hi Elizabeth --- it's sad but likely not unexpected.  You have the right attitude...moving on and moving forward...may your brother rest in peace.

At a time when all surviving should have appreciation for each other, it is the time that the factions in the family, or rifts from years past, rear their ugly head.  I am sorry your sister feels slighted by the omission in the death notice.  It may not have been intentional.  I do think you have the right approach in your view.  You see the good in what your sister-in-law did to save your brother.

I do hope everyone finds peace, because that is what your brother sought in the last year of his life.  Everyone should be following his lead.

Michael Jacobs People use death as a way sometimes to rehash old family disputes, and there is no place for that while you're grieving. I told my sister that she doesn't have to interact with her SIL anymore, so she should let the snub go.

Chris Ann Cleland I agree with you. My sister is hurt and angry and going through a whole host of other emotions. As her older sister, of course I want to make it right, but I also don't want to stir up a hornet's nest that does not need to be further provoked.

I think you have the right attitude, and you have to keep moving forward.  Your brother certainly faced his share of demons and undoubtedly, your SIL earned her wings.  It's such a shame when things deteriorate among family members, but it's all too frequent.  I hope your brother is able to rest in peace.

Susan Haughton I am trying to get my sister to a place where she can come to terms with his death, and the fact that nothing anybody else does can take away her love for my brother.

Good morning Elizabeth. It is sometimes difficult to understand and can be hurtful, but your thinking is so right.

This is an important topic for a blog, Elizabeth.  I've seen that ugliness rear its head, not only during real estate transactions, but in my own family as well. When My mother passed, her step children who had not seen her in over nine years, came out of the woodwork to contest her will.  Because I was named executor of her estate, I was targeted.  The legal wrangling went on for two years, and kept me tied in knots, and unable to grieve properly.  Gratefully, her will prevailed in court.
