In an effort to get rid of clutter, you might be throwing away things around your house that might be useful down-the-road. about.com came up with a list of 18 household things you should think twice about, before throwing out.
#1 Bread Ties and Clips
You might not think of them as being versatile but they can come in handy when organizing electric cords. You can even make bag decorations with the ends from tape rolls.
#2 Broken Crayons
These seem to accumulate quickly. But did you ever think about melting them down? You can use in candy molds or in other crafts. If DIY crafts isn’t your thing, you can always donate them to organizations.
#3 Rubber Bands
Rubber bands can be invaluable when it comes to packing a carry-on! Instead of folding your clothes, roll them up and secure items with a thick rubber band. Rubber bands are good for organizing art supplies, as well.
#4 Dryer Lint
It may sound odd, but dryer lint makes a great fire starter. So go ahead and have that campfire in the backyard!
#5 Wine Corks
Wine corks turn simple things into more creative items such as coasters, placemats, birdhouses, cork boards, ornaments, and, believe it or not, chandeliers!
#6 Toilet Paper Rolls
These can pile up in a hurry. about.com says use toilet paper rolls to make toys and other craft items.
#7 Candy Tins
Kids love using these tins to make craft items or to even decorate. If nothing else, they’re good for storage.
#8 Books
Covers and pages, even worn out books, can make beautiful decor, jewelry, and other items.
#9 Paint Swatch Cards
Pinterest has a lot of ideas on how to use swatch cards, including painting them.
#10 Plastic Bottles
Medicine bottles along with other types can be transformed by painting them.
#11 Citrus Peels
Cleaning supplies can be made from citrus peels. They’re also good to freshen indoor air.
#12 Buttons
Buttons can be fun to use in making crafts such as ornaments.
#13 Jars
Food jars can be reused to store dry food, refrigerate leftovers, and can be used for crafts.
#14 Egg Cartons
You can create paint palettes out of egg cartons or use them for small craft supply storage.
#15 Coffee Grounds
Coffee grounds are good for compost and indoor air quality.
#16 Packing Materials
Foam peanuts, styrofoam, and other packing materials can easily be reused. If you don’t need the materials, donate them to a shipping center instead of throwing away
#17 Pumpkin Seeds
Roasted and raw pumpkin seeds can be a real treat or be used in recipes.
#18 Old Shirts
Produce bags and cleaning rags are just two uses for old shirts.
