Today is the first day of summer and from the weather reports I've seen, it has come in fast and furious!!
Many of you down in the southern states are sweltering in your heat wave but so are we up north. Yes, Canada gets hit with heat waves too but ours comes with humidity which simply drains you when the air you breathe is WET !!
We've been under a heat advisory because, with the humidity our temps were reaching 37°C.
In checking the temperature conversion page to see what that was in your money I thought it very funny that it equaled 98.6 Fahrenheit (°F)
Wouldn't you think if the air temperature is the same temp as our bodies, that we'd not feel a difference?
If the human body is about 98.6 degrees, why are equivalent outdoor temperatures so uncomfortable, even dangerous?
Enquiring minds want to know so, the official answer is this:
Because our bodies need to disperse heat, and they can’t do that effectively when the air temperature is close to our body temperature. Our muscles and metabolism generate heat continuously. We transfer that heat into our surroundings by sweating, exhaling warm air, and circulating blood near the surface of our skin to cool. When the temperature gradient (or difference) between the body and the air is high, heat flows easily from us into the environment, and we cool down. But when the weather hovers around our internal temperature, our inner swelter lingers, and we feel hot and uncomfortable. Humidity makes things worse by interfering with the vaporization of sweat, one of the human body’s main cooling mechanisms.
You're welcome and keep your cool today on the 1st Day of Summer but don't forget to Sizzle too! PS I'll be using that fabulous term "my inner swelter" all summer long :)
