Almost Wordless Wednesday: Bank or Jail

Bank or Jail in Julian, CA

Bank or Jail in Julian

Julian, CA is a former gold mining town in the mountains about 90 minutes from the Carlsbad coast. While formerly known for the mines, the popularity now is as a mountain getaway (with snow in the winter), and the annual Apple Days Festival, apple orchards, and the Julian Pie Company. Julian is also a California historical landmark.

I'm not sure if this was a real bank and jail from the early days, or the town's humor just for tourists. Perhaps having the jail next door WAS a deterrent for bank robbers!

To open a town you need a bank. Someone will ended up going to jail later. If there are no banks the jailers will remain getting fed since that is the best place to be.

That is too funny.  Seems like the prisoners might be tempted to tunnel into the bank.

Julian is a cool little town, and so different from where I live at the coast. It reminds me of New England in many ways, especially with all the apples and the pine trees. It's a little touristy but if you avoid the busiest times it's a fun day trip or an overnight! I think there are actually some mines that you can tour.

Loved this picture, Jeff. I must admit from the title I wasn't at all sure where you were "heading" except maybe to talk about bank fraud.

Jeff,

Love the shot.  I remember William Johnson writing a post of this town and their fabulous apple pie...one of my faves.  A

Belinda Spillman  - Ha ha, I wonder if they thought of that?

Bob "RealMan" Timm  - great minds, or sneaky ones?

Nina Hollander  - no doubt Julian had some of that

Good memory!

Yes, Julian is known far and wide for its Julian Pies. And the good thing is there are a number of stores in our area that stock them, but getting them at the store in town is a treat. My favorite is the Peach Apple Crumb. The Apple and Mountain Berry is good as well, as is, of course, the traditional Apple.

That's a funny shot. Rob the bank and go directly to jail. LOL

Jeff I had to look twice - huh?   That is funny!  And I bet it was more real than fiction in the old west days in small towns.

Evelyn Johnston  - we've both  written about it...and it's pretty popular. We have one in our house right now - the peach and apple

Sharon Tara  - I remembered seeing this an chuckling after I found the photo the other day

Anna Banana Kruchten - I imagine that's true. It certainly wasn't being used today, unless they use it in the plays they put on in the town.

Hi Jeff,  Looks like you were in the tourist spirit. Did you happen to photograph the characters. It is such an easy place to spend the afternoon and always come home with a treat.  PS, I hear they are having a big 4th of July Parade. That should be a hoot!

Hi William Johnson

No, no characters that day other than the ones in town! LOL.

I heard about the celebration as well - nah, not dealing with the traffic and parking. And we have family in town!

Hope all is well!

Jeff, perhaps having the jail right next door was a deterrent for the bankers - a way to keep them honest!

Perhaps! I suspect if they have a fraud or robbery tendency, then it wouldn't matter any way!
