Quilt Exhibit at the San Diego Museum of Art - Balboa Park

San Diego Museum of Art Quilt Exhibit

We spend a couple of hours this past Monday at the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park. Enjoying museums and art galleries is one of our favorite things to do, and this was no exception, plus we had not been there before.

The quilt exhibit from 2 collectors, almost 50 in all, was most impressive. These are ALL hand done, which is pretty incredible when you see up close how many tens of thousands of stitches there are, and thousands of small pieces of fabric. These quilts were all made between 1860 or so and the early 1900s. Truly works of art!

They were truly amazing, and while I know nothing much about quilting (both my wife and daughter have done some, but mostly machine-made) I can appreciate how laborious these had to be. Unfortunately the photos are not close ups so you can't really appreciate how exacting and small the stitching is, not to mention the complexity of the shapes and colors. I would think some of these took years to make!

Lauren Selinsky CRS ePro - my wife has picked up a number of them at garage sales, thrift and antique stores. They are not always pristine, but typically are hand made as opposed to machine made.

I have watched my wife do some quilting, both hand and machine stitching, but these were simply incredible. It was great fun to see this artistry in person.
