Hello?! Anyone Home: Why We MUST Answer the Phone
It goes without saying that our cell phones have turned into our mobile offices with everything being an app away from being possible. Our worlds have become so immediate for information or results that we won't even wait for a download more than a few seconds. Imagine just a few short years ago we had to meet with folks face to face to do real estate transactions.
The trend of today for folks NOT to answer the phone instead relying on texting and emails is a TREND we should NOT encourage. Say what you will about today's young buyers only being aware of this type of communication and all the other reasons why text or email is the wave of the future but you will not convince me that this should be the practice of our field.
The purchase of a property no matter what size is an important choice that has ramifications in all areas of a person's life. To treat this transaction such as we would buy clothes online is a disservice to our customers. They need us as professionals to explain the seriousness of a decision to buy or sell and what this process can and will entail for them.
I am in no way saying that texting and emails aren't important and useful tools that help real estate transactions go more expeditiously but let's save that for each other and not our customers. When a customer calls we need to answer or make the effort to call back within a reasonable amount of time. There are more and more stories of customers reporting that their agents were hard to get on the phone or that they would only respond to text or emails.
