The Trump Effect on Real Estate Professionals

(original article here)

Carlos Herboso is one of our top producer agents for our company Maxus Realty Group,
as he was showing homes to one of his clients,

He heard it loud and clear...

"We don't want Muslims in our clubhouse, take off that robe over your head!"

We train our agents with scripts & Dialogues to use in all situations when our agents encounter objections..

I never thought of giving them a script to respond to this..

"We don't want Muslims in our clubhouse, take off that robe over your head!"

How do you respond to that?

There is a new disturbing trend we are encountering as real estate professionals.
In our business. .
Our real estate agents go through several steps before showing houses to our clients.
There is the preparation time for loan application, consultation and a complete study of the market for location and homes availability.

All of this is dependent on the client's preferences according to their needs: workplace, commuting times, school locations, neighborhood amenities, community benefits, near other family members, etc. etc

Finding the right home in the right place at the right price is the culmination of all that work..
except in this case..
someone threw out a monkey wrench into this real estate transaction.,,

Meet Carlos clients:
A Veteran with a Muslim wife "armed" with a VA loan to save money on their mortgage costs.
A Veteran who served our country the United States of America...
Carlos helped prepare them for their home purchase plans,
after a long process of collaboration and applications, they were finally ready to achieve the American Dream of finally owning a home.

They visited several homes during the day before arriving to a new community located of Worman's Mill in Frederick Maryland

As they entered the property, the house seemed to be exactly what the couple was looking for
It had all the features they wanted in their new home,
"Carlos, I believe this is it, let's write an offer on this one"
Said the happy couple.
Carlos wanted introduce them to all the wonderful amenities that came with the property inside this beautiful neighbor..
The pool, the party room, exercise room tennis courts...
as they made a quick visit to the clubhouse,
they heard the warning from one presumed resident of the area. .
loud and clear..

"We don't want Muslims in our clubhouse, take off that robe over your head!"

Carlos, did the right thing,
Instead of confronting the bigoted person..
he apologized to his clients for having to hear the racist comment as he summoned them and proceeded to complain to the manager inside the clubhouse

The appalled manager identified her as a "retired school teacher" and made it clear immediately, that the "teacher" was speaking for herself and not for the whole community

It is after all only my assumptive opinion that there is a new air of racism and bigotry in a lot of people today..
Only one person could be the instigator of all this,
Running a campaign based on bigotry, prosecution and separatism,
As a Hispanic citizen of this great country for over 30 years, I feel that change
As I encountered the same thing myself when I was showing homes to a dear family in an affluent neighborhood
My client's 4 year old child needed to use to the bathroom and the house I was showing them did not have running water.
Instead of going to the nearest gas station a few miles away,
I saw a neighbor outside the yard and I asked politely for permission to use their bathroom for my client's child.
"Can the little girl use the bathroom please? "
The neighbor refused, went inside and close the door.
I was livid and disappointed...
At that time, I suspected the choice of vestment from my clients was the only reason. .
but I was never sure,
it is precisely in that gray area where racism is alive and well inside the souls of a lot of people these days...
I'm concerned about my agents, and most importantly,
I'm concerned about my own family

Rep. Charlie Rangel was recently quoted as saying Donald Trump has "pulled the sheets off" a party.
It may be so, I don't know...
But, I was a registered Republican long ago...
I did not leave the party. .
The party left me
I was a proud registered Republican when Ronald Reagan said
"Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"
and now they are saying..
"Let's build a beautiful wall"
Big difference. .

As a business owner, it is always good advice not too choose sides when it comes to politics, sports and religions. . . .

I loved the post until it got political.

I do think unless the lady made some remark about race her you taking it that way is sad.

I grew up in the days of Martin Luther King and always thought that we would be a colorless society by now.

Good evening Mark Artesani,

I was hoping the same thing about our society.  However we do not seem to have made much progress.

Having been a military family most of our adult lives, my husband and I were very Republican, until we moved to Charleston, SC and found out what the base of the Republican party really was. This is not to say that ALL Republicans had the same issues, but it certainly was apparent in that atmosphere what has become more and more apparent during the recent election campaigns. Gone is political correctness, which in some ways is very good for the country and very bad in others. The good news is that we cannot change the situation while it lives in the shadows. Now that we've thrown a light on it, it's up to us to change the circumstances.

I understand why the article is polarizing as many who are followers of the Donald don't believe they fit the bigoted profile that he expresses on a regular basis. They follow him for other reasons (which honestly I still don't get, but that's my poltical opinion). The important thing about your post, IMO, is that we need to realize that the blatent commentary that was overheard in the community space is all too common and can in fact reduce property values and create all kinds of difficult situations for fair housing discrimination, or at least the perception of it.

What is the base of the republican party?  Curious?  Is that the people you met and them, or the what???

I love the low informed voters and there tweets.  I am guessing, you for sure listen to Mark Levin!

"Safety" is such a fun concept.  Because if you don't feel safe, then you live in fear.  Want to know who planned and carried out 9-11?  Give me a call.  I'll enlighten you Robert Hicks

I have traveled the world over.  I've been to India, Germany, France, Netherlands, Morocco, Switzerland, all over the U.S., and parts in between.  I traveled by myself, and never felt "scared" It's all a matter of perception, whom you choose to tune into, what level you gravitate to . . . I live on a much higher ground.  Most do not.  Jesus did, but you might not understand meditation, metaphysical and other elements of his ministry.  Oh, like those pesky Beatitudes . . . and that TOTALLY irrelevant Mark 12:31.  I'm sure it's only applicable when convenient for most folks . . . present company included?!?

Thanks for taking time from your busy day to share your opinion. WOW,,, pretty awesome travels, congrats. I hope to make it over to the next county someday before I croke. "Safety is such a fun concept" ??? Wonder how the good folks in Orlando, San Bernardino, Chattanooga and of course New York (many others) feel about that? What is your thoughts on how many more terror attacts have to happen on American soil before we need to be a little more "safe"? Two, five, twenty, how many? Or is it just a way of life today? Not too worried about myself, but I have grandchildren.. Oh,, and please enlighten me on who planned and carried out 9-11, and while you are at it, throw in why? Appreciate your wisdom and I love those pesky little Beatitudes.

A basic tenant of this country is freedom of speech. I find it ironic that it's rarely Trump supporters who are violent at rallys when confronted with opposing views.

Trump's comments at times can be questionable; however, there are times his comments are taken out of context.

You said that only one person could be responsible for the Muslim comment. I do not believe Fernando you can attribute that woman's comment to Trump. Did you ask her that? She is responsible for her own actions and speech.

You did not follow your own advice of not picking sides in politics as a business owner.

Without living in a border state it is hard to imagine the scope of the problems of an open border. It's not about racism, it's about other countries problems spilling over into ours. Death squads, murderous street gangs, drugs and human trafficking, all reasons to leave Central America, but those same problems come with the immigrants. Money earned from slave wages and  government welfare are then sent back to these same home countries to help families, pay ransoms and the smuggling expenses.  Donald Trump is a Realtor and that makes any commentary about him fair game.  His view on other Realtors, he calls us  Blood Suckers: Taken From Inman news...

"When presidential candidate Donald Trump made a disparaging remark about real estate agents and brokers at a campaign rally last month, many listeners may not have realized that “The Donald” is one of their own.

That’s right. Donald J. Trump — the Republican frontrunner for the highest office in the land — is a licensed real estate broker in New York. So are his adult children, Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric.

The Trump Organization owns Trump International Realty, a luxury brokerage based in Manhattan with branch offices in Westchester, New York; Jupiter and Miami, Florida; Charlotte, North Carolina; Chicago; and Las Vegas.

But a remark Trump made at a Dec. 21 political rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, may leave the nation’s more than 1 million licensees wondering what a Trump presidency would have in store for them.

“These PACs [political action committees], the money is all being stolen from inside cuz the consultants are like bloodsuckers. They’re ten times worse than a real estate salesman or broker, ten times, which is saying pretty bad stuff,” he said."

Are those of you who are Pro Trump agents in his brokerage or do you write copy for his speeches??????   Just asking because some of you sure don't mind asking Fernando Herboso if he is a US citizen.  Just wondering how it feels to have your heart felt views and experiences questioned?

Thank you for your comment Nancy, I appreciate the fact to know that I'm not alone on my sentiments, as  several of my friends reached out to me..which I appreciate it.

I'm still trying to comprehend what makes someone write something like this..and feel ok doing it?

As I said before..my hope is to use this post as a lesson not what is happening to real estate agent anymore..but what is happening to us in general...as human beings

Nothing good has even been accomplished with hate and separatism...

what is next?

Do you wnat to welcome a CATHOLIC in your neighborhood?

Is a religion after all...and they have the right to EQUAL TREATMENT

Phewww...I'm glad no one questioned the fact that Timothy McVeigh who killed 168 Americans was a Roman Catholic..

I don't even know what to say, other than this is sad on more levels than the ignorant rantings of the retired teacher at some clubhouse. I'm so sorry as a human being, as someone who happens to be living in this land of the bloody free and supposedly brave people, sad that you had to deal with the blatant bigotry more than once, it appears, and from your fellow real estate professionals at that. I read your post and every single comment and the Washington Post article and I'm more convinced than ever that it's nearly impossible to say anything without it becoming somehow political or race related. I'm not a fan of Trump but would have valued your post more had he been left out of it.

I don't see the behavior of the woman who refused use of her bathroom as racist. I would have denied you entry to my home because unfortunately today it's the smart thing to do.

The comments are proof you arent going to change anyone's opinion....R and D tend to stand by and defend their candidates and demonize the other.

So much anger. It's frightening how much anger we continue to see.

Trump for Dummies: "Next time you see Trump on TV don’t laugh or jeer or turn away. You’re watching 70 years of the bottom feeding side of American history."

He learned from the best. Roy Cohn was his mentor.

"Trump came to public attention in 1973 when he was accused by the Justice Department of violations of the Fair Housing Act in the operation of 39 buildings. The government alleged that Trump's corporation quoted different rental terms and conditions to blacks and made false "no vacancy" statements to blacks for apartments they managed in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island"

He hired me, and the rest is his-tory.

I was watching our 4th of July parade, at 3.5 miles reputed to be the longest in the nation, and thought it was worth a comment here.

Thousands and thousands of people in 170+ groups were proud to be Americans - even though they were about as different and diverse as one can imagine. Tens of thousands more sat or stood the entire parade route, applauding, smiling, waving and cheering their neighbors.

Having walked it many times I remember the sense we were all participants - marchers and parade watchers - in a neighborhood we all share. People I didn't know have brought me snacks, ice water, even the choice of a small margarita or bloody mary as we neared the 1 mile to go mark! Some people roll out massive BBQs in the driveway and hold block parties under tents.

There was an elaborate float with 25+ friendly neighbors just celebrating being friendly neighbors. I recently wrote an offer for a client on that block but my buyers came in 2nd of 6 bids. It sold at 26% over asking price – any guess that the neighbors were a factor?

It’s as though we distilled a nation of 320 million people and they walked past me in about 2 hours. If you ever wondered what diverse Americans look like having fun celebrating being Americans, our parade embodied it.

That Washington Post article is a great example how they take just part of a comment to make it sound different.

They took part of my comment, #78, and it sounds different without the quote I use at the beginning.  They said that I "lashed out" at you.

Really?

You referred to yourself as an Hispanic citizen of this country.  I just asked what exactly does it mean to be an "Hispanic citizen" instead of an "American citizen".  Is that lashing out?  Cut me a break.

My grandparents came over from the Ukraine.  I have never referred to myself as being a Ukrainian citizen of this country.  I'm an American citizen with Ukrainian heritage.
