At the Russ Lyon Sotheby’s Phoenix office, I help clients that are moving only a few miles away but also those moving out-of-state. Sometimes, the relocation out-of-the-valley can present more challenges here at Sotheby’s Phoenix. But I came across an article in realtormag.com that gives some helpful hints.
Basically, the article says one of the trickiest parts of relocating a client is giving them recommendations for movers. I find that to be true, as well, since at Sotheby’s Phoenix, it can be tough to get a good perspective on the reputation of many moving companies. You might recognize the name and think it’s reputable since the company has been in business a number of years, but many of their employees at the local level tend to be more transient. Unless you know these employees, it’s going to be tough to recommend a moving company to your client to ensure they get good service.
One thing you can do is ask other clients if they can recommend a moving company. But beyond that, there are a couple of websites you can refer clients to.
MovingScam.com: You’ll find message boards, reviews, resources, and tools on this independent site to help find reputable moving companies both nationally and internationally.
Protect Your Move: The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration started an online campaign to inform and alert consumers to the risks of fraud when working with moving companies. You’ll find information on this site about consumer rights and responsibilities, planning a move, filing a formal complaint, and more.
Aside from a moving company, another idea the article suggests, and something I’ve recommended at Sotheby’s Phoenix, are PODS. They’re mobile storage units used to relocate home owners. You can rent them by the month. They get delivered to the home owner who then fills each unit. After each unit is filled, the owner calls for it to be picked up and transported to their new home.
FYI, PODS has a promotional program for real estate agents that includes PODS fliers and discount coupons branded with the agent’s logo.
Other moving and storage programs available to real estate professionals include the online moving marketplace Unpakt Referrals, that offers agents a 10-percent referral fee. Atlas Van Lines subsidiary, Avail Move Management, offers MOVR. The service helps relocation experts help clients with planning and managing a move. Finally, moving.com is a service from realtor.com® operator Move Inc. that helps real estate clients plan their move and receive competitive bids from up to four licensed and insured moving companies.
