One of the most beloved, charming, and historic parks in San Antonio is Brackenridge Park. The park was created by George Brackenridge in 1899 with his original donation of land to the city and the park then opened in 1901. Mr. Brackenridge was an important San Antonio community leader in the beginning of the twentieth century and also well known as a strict tea totaler.  He orginal donation was for 100 acres to the Alamo city but now Breckenridge Park totals 343 acres.  Mr. Breckenridge's orginal donation came with a very strong exception.  His caveat was that his land donation remained with the city but only as long as no alcoholic beverages were ever sold on the land. If alcohol were ever sold on his donated land then his donated land would revert back to him or his heirs. And thus, to this day no alcohol is sold in Brackenridge Park.

Today Brackenridge Park area includes the Japanese Tea Garden, the San Antonio Zoo, one of the oldest and most acclaimed 18 hole public golf courses in America (laid out by famous golf architect  A. W. Tillinghast), the Sunken Gardens, an active, fun minature railway train, some beautiful treed walking trails,  many picnic areas, a city golf driving and putting range and and additionally, Breckenridge Park is convenient to the Witte Museum, Deseum Children's Museum, and the San Antonio Botanical Gardens. The San Antonio River begins in Breakenridge Park and meanders though the park adding some truly lovely scenery. Breckenridge Park is truly a San Antonio treasure.
