This year marks the 70th year for this festival, and it just gets bigger and better each year. This festival was started to celebrate the cherry harvest in the Paonia area of Delta County. It's one of the longest running festivals in Colorado. The fun starts on Friday, July 1st and lasts the entire 4th of July holiday weekend.
Cherry Days always takes place on the 4th of July weekend. It was started by the local Lions Club in 1946.
Friday Paonia kicks off the weekend with Downtown Days. Throughout the weekend there will be a variety of events happening including a cherry pit spitting contest, baking contest, live music, a 5K run, a rodeo and more. Here's a full schedule of events.
Paonia (named after the Latin name for the peony flower) has deep agricultural roots. The orchards began sometime in the 1880s and now the area is known for it's fruit and vineyards. There are also many area wineries.
The town is in the eastern part of Delta County along the North Fork of the Gunnison River. Delta County is divided up into regions, and Paonia is in that area of the county called The North Fork.
