Ask An Ambassador: Is Self-Advertising Okay?

By
Real Estate Agent with Transaction Alliance 513.520.5305 www.LizTour.com SAL.2002007747

If you're a real estate agent chances are strong you want MORE business!  Chances are also strong that you're in the Rain participating because you want to learn how to increase your business, gain relationships and hopefully gain referrals.

Blogging in the Rain gives us two main audiences:

1.  Consumers

2.  Fellow Rainers

How we approach these two audiences is significantly different.  For group 1, self-advertising is definitely called for, but it requires a delicate touch.  It's not all about you but all about them.  You want to demonstrate expertise and competence, but with a bit more subtlety than Negan's bat Lucille.

Your blog is the avenue for broadcasting those messages.  Answering consumer questions, helping them find the right homes, etc.  Advertise away!  You can even use your blog to advertise to group 2!  Think of all the virtual assistants, inspectors, web gurus and more here in the Rain. They write to attract our business.

But there is an area where self-advertising is against the ActiveRain Community Guidelines:

Do not advertise yourself or your services in the comment section of another member's post.

Consider the audience of the blogger's post.  Is it consumer based?  So are you trying to swipe their potential clients after they did the work of writing the post?  Trying to swipe some SEO credibility with the bots?

Either way, it's a no-no.  Linking within a comment MIGHT be acceptable under the right circumstances, but in general not when the post is consumer facing and not when you're using the comment to self-promote.

And it may also be dependent upon your relationship with the blogger.  If you're friends, it might be in good fun.  If they don't know you, they just may delete your comment as spam.

And by the way, another method of self-advertising that is frowned upon is using the AR email/contact system to spam people.  You don't win any friends with that approach.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help!

There does not seem to be a shortage of those who post links in a comment. Now they even ask questions which they answer themselves with a link to their own blog.

Excellent post, first of all you have to identify your target audience. And yes, I agree 100% the content must bring interesting information for the consumers to like you as a knowledge professional in the field. You may want to sell a house, but instead of openly list it, you may address an important fact, like an special irrigation system, etc ........

Sam, It's easy not to know it initially.  And some bloggers are okay with linking, others aren't.

Dave, It's a great community and a lot to learn here.

Dan, Some don't know, others I suspect know and don't care.

Tammy, That's the frustrating part.  Newbies I don't truly expect to know.  Someone pushing a million points? They know exactly what they're doing.

Kat, No advertising, no attempts to gather traffic for themselves, let the poster be the one benefitting from their work.

Annette, Most new Rainers will learn, no damage done.  They just need to know what they don't know.

Jennifer, True!

Lise, Thanks!

Harry, It's really not that difficult to stay out of trouble in the Rain as long as members read the guidelines.

Tony & Suzanne, Thanks for the reblog!

Scott, I don't see it as much as I used to, but then again I'm not getting to as many posts a day as I used to.  Business is good, and something had to give.

JM, It's all in trying to figure out what the consumers want, and how to give it to them in an attractive package.

Richie, I get tempted too!  The urge to call someone out for their poor behavior can in turn be perceived as poor behavior.  There's irony aplenty out there :)

Beth, No doubt they could wind up wondering why their comment was deleted.

Sham, That's one of the great things about this community.

Sally, And figuring out that difference is a challenge for some members.

Sharon, Under the right circumstances I'm okay with it, but in general never in a consumer facing post unless the blogger has ASKED for the link to be placed.

Excellent advice!  Just today I posted a link to a Rainmakers comment, but it was about Arizona in general as he wasn't sure of his answer.  I don't feel it was meant as anything other than informational and it definitely was not advertising me or my services.  Anything else is just plain wrong!
