Looking at Things Like a Child - Ramah State Wildlife Area

When is the last time that you looked at your surroundings like a child might?   This week has been a bit challenging on my ranch and I really needed to unwind.  So, I decided to visit the Ramah State Wildlife Area.  It is north of Colorado Springs on Highway 24.  It is located between the small towns of Calhan and Ramah.

This Ramah State Wildlife Area is very simple and understated when compared to the Colorado Springs areas' other attractions such as Garden of the Gods, the Manitou Incline, Helen Hunt Falls, the Paint Mines, Pikes Peak etc.   However, the Ramah State Wildlife Area does have a small fishing lake with a boat ramp.  It also provides the opportunity for bird watching.

At first, I was disappointed that I didn't get out there when the lighting would be optimal for photographs of the lake.   Yet after watching a grandpa with his grand kids getting ready to fish,  I decided to take a deep breath of air and to just enjoy myself.     I found myself feeling like a child full of amazement as I really noticed my surroundings.

How long has it been since you looked at a frog up close?

What about a dragon fly?

This plant was cool.

What would you see if you looked at your surroundings through the eyes of a child?

Sincerely,

Well, Sondra, first of all, I think that often photographers DO see things through a child's eyes, awestruck by what is offered all around us.

It is a visual pleasure to take in your wonders of the day at Ramah State Wildlife area. The frog (so COOL!), the dragonfly--I've gotten photos of ones just like him--and the curly-cue plant are the very things that I, too would photograph with excitement to share with friends!

Thank you for this. J'oie de vivre!

This looks like an interesting place. As always the pictures are great. I'm particular to the frog. They don't usually remain in place long enough to get a good picture. Have a happy 4th!

Dale Poll Yep- I learned that about frogs yesterday.  That is why I don't have a front view. Lol.  I've gotten spoiled to editing in Lightroom and then couldn't get these pictures imported into Lightroom so they are "natural - straight from the camera."

Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Realtor (503)755-2905 Thank you!   Sometimes, I worry that I've found myself focusing on bigger and grander things to photograph rather than the little things.  Your photos are always great.  Thanks for stopping by and I hope you have a great day.

Sondra, I liked that you knew it was time to take a break. That is a very wise move when pressure builds up. Thinking like a child, seeing the world like a child, well that is a total natural for me!! Lately I have even seen many animated movies, so there you have it, proof, haha. With nature I have always looked at things like toads in great detail, and truth be told one time on a rainy night with a big box went out and collected over 50 of them to transplant them into my yard to eat the bugs and make me laugh. Am I acting like a child enough for you? This state wildlife area sounds like a great escape. By the way I always wanted to build a helicopter-plane hybrid that functioned like the dragonfly. They can fly backwards with their hovering you know? My engineer hat. Great post.

Gary Woltal Yes, it does sound like you still have the child in you.  Honestly, I didn't want to touch the frogs much less take them home.   They seemed very happy there.   :)

Hi Sondra - Great photos and a nice low-pressure environment for decompressing. I know where Ramah is, but I've never been out east of Colorado Springs very far. Have a great weekend!

Sondra, what amazing photos!  I've never been quite that close to a frog that I wasn't holding.
