The San Antonio Zoo originated in 1914 with a donation of land by community leader - George Breckenridge to the city of San Antonio. The Zoo now encompasses 56 acres with 35 of those acres available for walking and animal viewing. The setting is especially lovely with many large old trees and frequently meanders/touches with the San Antonio River. The Zoo is home to approximately 750 species and welcomes a million visitors yearly. The San Antonio's Zoo's bird collection is considered to be among the largest in the zoo world. And our Zoo has the distinction of being one of the first cageless zoos in the US. Additionally, there is a special children's zoo for children 5 and under. The San Antonio Zoo is open all year round. And you should not miss seeing it.
In the July 1st USA Today there is a endearing story about the introduction of Lucky (a 57 year old Asian elephant who has been here at our Zoo since he was two) and Nicole ( a 40 year old Asian elephant who previously was with the Ringling Bros. circus). Nicole had a reputation for getting along with all the elephants she was around while Lucky had a less positive reputation. But they met and they now are almost always together. I do not know if it love or just a terrific friendship. But no matter it is a very heartwarming story of two mammals who enjoy each other's company. And in this day and age isn't that nice to hear.
