What Your Home Can Live Without

By
Real Estate Agent with Russ Lyon Sotheby's International Realty

As a Russ Lyon Sotheby’s realtor, I’m always looking for fun articles on the do’s and don’ts of home decorating.  I came across this one in about.com on 6 things you should never do in your home.  I had to laugh because it’s so true.

Bathroom Rugs

Nothing like a hot pink bathroom rug and toilet cover (actually, it doesn’t matter what the color is) to draw attention to the part of the bathroom you really don’t want to draw attention to.  Like the article says, you really don’t need a carpet-like covering for a toilet seat lid or a matching rug.  These items are also a germ collector.  Best to leave the toilet seat bare and put a small throw rug a distance away from the toilet.

Picture Frames

Too many picture frames is another thing I’ve noticed as a Russ Lyon Sotheby’s realtor.  Usually, the frames never match and are small and cheaply made.  They’re either hanging on a wall close together or on a table.  It’s better to pick a few favorites, buy better frames, and then display the pictures with prominence.

Curtains

Nothing worse than outdated curtains.  In fact, some rooms don’t even need them, especially if there’s a picturesque window.  It also might be a window where you don’t need privacy.  Before deciding whether to take them down, look to see if they’re faded, dated, or even too short.

Vases

Cheap glass vases is yet another thing a home can do without.  At Russ Lyon Sotheby’s, I always advise clients to get rid of them.  If you have fresh flowers, a few nice vases in different sizes should be plenty.

Fake Flowers

Speaking of vases, using them for fake flowers is a no-no.  While some artificial plants can be attractive, chances are large, artificial flower arrangements probably look dusty and dated.  This goes for fake trees, too.  Consider a live tree, easy-to-grow houseplants, a small vase of fresh flowers, or simply a bowl of fruit on the table.

Knickknacks Galore!

Cluttered and messy are two ways to describe a home where there are too many knickknacks.  I come across this all the time at Russ Lyon Sotheby’s.  If you have large collections, simply rotate them out.  It’ll keep your decor fresh looking while achieving a more professional look.
