Coffee ~ It Does a Body Good!

Upon awakening, my first course of action is to reach for the coffee. This post might have been entitled "Don't Talk To Me Before I've Had My Coffee!". Most coffee lovers will attest to that statement.

As much as I love coffee, I don't drink it at night since it keeps me awake.

On a recent trip to the grocery store, I bought a container of chocolate protein powder for my smoothies. I couldn't read the ingredients without my glasses, but since I love chocolate, I plopped the container in my shopping cart and brought it home.

Last night I whipped up the concoction and it looked so tempting in all its chocolaty, velvety glory.

Before taking the first sip, I glanced at the ingredient list, and there it was...

EACH SERVING CONTAINS 150 MILLIGRAMS OF CAFFEINE.

Rather than be awake until 3 a.m., I opted to forego the smoothie. This morning, I researched how much caffeine is in a regular cup of coffee. The amount varies, of course, on how strong you make it, but the average is between 80-150 milligrams per cup.

My research uncovered the BENEFITS of that morning cup of joe, benefits that my body knew all the time.

  • Coffee is rich in antioxidants
  • Coffee can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease and Type 2 Diabetes
  • Coffee has nutrients, including magnesium, potassium, and B vitamins
  • Studies also say that caffeine is a mood-booster, aids in metabolism, improves memory, and reduces the risk of suicide

As with anything, moderation is key. Don't overdo or there can be side effects. Consume less than 400 milligrams a day, or no more than 4 cups. (P.S.: I am not a doctor so do your research).

The moral of the story: I knew there was a reason I don't function well without my morning cup, and science backs me up.

Pat- I do love my coffee, and just the other day saw something on Dr. Oz that mentioned the benefits of coffee.  I have high-test coffee in the morning and then decaf the rest of the day and yes, 1 cup after dinner.

Hi Pat - I'm glad we've worked our way, at least temporarily, around to the "coffee is good" part of the cycle - I have one less thing to feel guilty about.

Hi Pat... I could not live without my coffee! And none of that dishwater style coffee either. I'm so manic about my coffee, I installed a built-in Miele coffee maker when we built our house 10 years ago. Today that little system costs over $3,000! Now you know how serious I am.

Will Hamm - I know better than drink it after 4:00 p.m.

Karen Hellier - girl, I popped in in the freezer for the next morning!

Anna Banana Kruchten & John Pusa - I won't tell you how much I consume. Let's just say I have to have it. :)

Kathy Streib - the fact that I discovered there were "benefits" doesn't mean I would have quit drinking coffee if the research went the other way. It's a daily grind. :)

Dick Greenberg - No guilt here!

Nina Hollander - Yes, ma'am, I believe you are serious about some coffee! I feel the same way.

I've always been more of a tea drinker rather than coffee.  However, I did note that on September 1st, Starbucks brought back it's Pumpkin Spice Latte, and I immediately jumped in the car to go get one!  Love that stuff!

Myrl Jeffcoat - I like tea almost the same as my coffee. You can keep the Pumpkin Spice Latte all to yourself!

I gave up coffee a week ago. I love coffee. I love Pumpkin Spice Latte Myrl Jeffcoat and will need to exercise great restraint and not indulge. I am over the withdrawals now .... and I still love coffee. It has never kept me up ... so that is not an issue for me.

I find it to be an essential ingredient in every part of the day, I even enjoy by last 24 ounce cup of coffee of the day while doing my late night blogging.

A psychiatrist once told me that caffeine is a good substitute for the meds that many take for ADHD, and most of my staff tries to keep me well stimulated and focused.

It does work well to help me to relax and focus.

Now tell me about this Chocolate powder, perhaps it would be a good coffee enhancer.

Bob Crane - you consume a bit more than I can handle, but I'm a grouch without my coffee. The mysterious chocolate substance is a protein powder, widely available at most health food stores or grocery stores. I use it when dieting or just to get some vitamins.

Kathleen Daniels - Did you give up coffee for a particular reason? I hope all is well with you.  When I take breaks from coffee, it's for medical tests or a health kick or cleanse.  Usually not by choice!

Pat Starnes - I got sick one week ago today. Lost 8 pounds. I just thought it was a good time to give it up and make some lifestyle changes. Thank you for asking.
