Atlanta Internet Buyer Orientation:
The Greater Atlanta Metro Area
So you want to move to the Greater Atlanta Metro Area but you aren't sure exactly what that means. In 2016, the definition of the Greater Atlanta Metropolitan Area is visible in the map above. The area shown is considered home to almost 6,000,000 people.
When saying you are moving to Atlanta, you encounter a wide range of strong opinions from friends and co-workers. Some people extol the City Lifestyle and others insist you should be outside the City Limits. Others recommend even farther away from the City of Atlanta.
Let's start with the question of exactly what is the definition of Atlanta? Over the past decades, the Greater Atlanta Metro Area has grown from the "Five County Area" to the "12-County area" to the "21-County area" and now to the 29-County Area shown above.
The dark lines on the map mark the Interstate Highway System. As you can see, one forms more or less of a circle around the central part of the Metro area. That road - known as I-285 or The Perimeter - defines many comments about where to live in "Atlanta" - ITP or OTP - inside or outside The Perimeter.
Not all of the area included ITP is within the City Limits of Atlanta. Looking at the map below, the red line included within defines the actual City Limits of Atlanta. The City of Atlanta itself has approximately 460,000 inhabitants.
The differences between living out in the counties beyond The Perimeter, the areas just outside The Perimeter and actually living inside the City of Atlanta are innumerable. Yet they boil down to some relatively simple choices.
Walk to shopping or drive?
Access to MARTA Rapid Transit?
Close to Museums and Theater?
Access to your favorite pastimes or hobbies?
Long commute to work or a short commute or no commute at all?
Put some thought into those questions and you will begin to narrow down your areas of interest within the Greater Atlanta Metro Area.
