Learn How To Maintain Your Swimming Pools With These Amazing DYI Tips!

Having a pristine looking pool involves a deliberate and regular cleaning and maintenance routine. However, if you are going to clean or service any equipment on your own like the water pump and filters always refer to the manufacturers' manual. If you really want your pool to be in tip-top condition for years to come then, you will need to be personally involved in its cleaning and general maintenance.

Here are some pool cleaning and maintenance tips you can adopt today!

1. Skim Your Pool Surface

You don't want floating debris to sink to the bottom of your pool as this becomes more difficult to remove so you can use a hand skimmer which basically is just a long-handled net used to remove leaves, bugs, and other unwanted debris in your pool. Skimming can also reduce your need to add chemicals like chlorine to your pool water; it will also increase your pool's circulation system.

2. Vacuum Your Pool often

It is necessary to vacuum your pool at least once weekly in order to minimize the amount of chemicals you require to add to your pool and also to keep your pool water clean, clear and avoid any backwash. Make sure you check your filter after vacuuming and clean it if need be.

3. Brush Your Vertical Walls

Apart from vacuuming, you should also brush your swimming pool's vertical wall surface. This will help to control the accumulation of calcium deposits and algae. If your pool has a plaster-lined concrete wall surface, then you can use a stiff brush, where you have a tiled wall use a soft brush to avoid the scratching off of the grouting material also use a soft brush if your pool has fiberglass or vinyl walls.

4. Regularly Clean Your Filters

Filters come in three types namely;

  1.  diatomaceous earth
  2. sand
  3. cartridge

You will need to clean your filters as often as recommended especially if your pool is regularly used, although each type of filter has its own cleaning procedure that must be observed, always refer to the manufacturers' manual. You can know when it's time to clean your filter when theres an increase in the flow between your pool's pressure gauge and it's flow meter. If you notice that the difference is between 10 to 15 pounds per square inch, then it's time for you to clean your filter.

5. Regularly Check Your Water Level

Where summer has passed, or you drain your pool to carry out maintenance try not to leave it empty for an extended period. You should leave water in your pool during winter as the weight of the pool water will negate the pressure from the ground that pushes upwards from below against your swimming pool. You can maintain your swimming pool today by applying these basic DIY tips and save money in both the short and long run.

Angie, sure sounds like great advice for those homeowners with a pool.  We don't see many around Denver with our short summer.
