June 2016 Jobs Report
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday that 287,000 jobs were created in June, above the 175,000 expected. The better-than-expected number was somewhat offset by May's revision lower to just 11,000 jobs from 38,000. From April to June, job growth averaged 147,000 per month, below the five-year high of 282,000 in the fourth quarter of 2015. The Labor Department said job growth occurred in leisure and hospitality, health care and social assistance, and financial activities. Employment also increased in information, mostly reflecting the return of workers from a strike.
