Oh Hampton Roads, we are so VERY lucky!!!!

Yoder Dairies, a locally owned and operated dairy in Virginia Beach still makes home deliveries!!!!

yoder productsYoder Dairies has been serving our community since 1929, when Eli and Elmer Yoder, two Amish farmers from Kempsville, Virginia, began what would eventually grow into the present day dairy. The Yoders needed an outlet for their dairy farms so they set up a small plant and began bottling milk. By 1931, they were required by the health department to begin pasteurizing their milk. They knew that this would be more than they could handle by themselves, so they drew up a charter and formed a co-op with all of the area Amish dairy farmers. The co-op built a large plant on Princess Anne Road and purchased trucks to replace their horses and wagons. The dairy specialized in delivering fresh dairy products to homes in the Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake areas.

In 1996, the co-op decided to dissolve and planned to shut down the dairy. Ken and Elsie Miller, feeling that home delivery was too important to disappear, bought Yoder Dairies just two weeks before it was due to close its doors. The business had a special meaning to the Millers, as Ken, his brother, father and grandfather had all worked for Yoder Dairies in the past. Today, family remains the binding force at Yoder; Ken and Elsie's daughter, Maria, is the General Manager and her husband, Bobby, is Maintenance Supervisor.

Truly blessed with a loving, wonderful family, Ken and Elsie have faithful employees as well. The entire staff stayed at Yoder Dairies when the Millers took over.

Yoder Dairies has experienced many changes since 1929. The two local dairies that supply the milk today produce more than the original 32 Amish farmers combined, but the freshness and purity of the milk has not changed. The cows are not given any growth hormones to grow faster or produce more milk. If a cow is sick and requires antibiotics, the cow is removed from production until it is healthy and its milk tests clean of any medication.

Yoder is the only home delivery dairy in the Commonwealth of Virginia. They deliver a wide variety of dairy and juice products to over 5,000 homes per week in Hampton Roads and Williamsburg. They recently added ice cream and have completed a new processing plant on Princess Anne Road. Though times have changed, the commitment to high standards of freshness, quality, and convenience has not changed since Yoder Dairies began in 1929. They are proud of their Mennonite heritage and continue to uphold those values in their business.

Home delivery is very easy and convenient.  You send in a short credit check form to Yoder and then a very nice lady calls you to set up your weekly delivery.  You can set a cooler our for the milkman or Yoder has milk boxes available for purchase.  If you visit their website:  http://www.yoderdairies.com/, there are 2 coupons for new customers!

They require a minimum weekly order of 2 half gallons of milk, or a combination of products, to start home delivery. They deliver once a week in most areas of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Hampton, Poquoson, Newport News, Suffolk, Williamsburg and parts of York County.

I have been a regular delivery customer for a few years.  I can tell you that Yoder has the BEST chocolate milk and sweet tea around!  They also deliver eggs, seasonal egg nog, sour cream, whipping cream, orange juice, butter and many other products.

Tina-that brings back memories. When I was little we had milked delivered to our door in Springfield VA. Of course when I visited my grandparents who owned a dairy farm the milk was delivered right from the cow :-)

Tina, my job was to milk the cow before school then Granny would boil it and skim the cream. Our local store would take her grocery order over the phone and deliver the goods to the house. Great post!

Tina,

What a great blog post. I must admit, I am a Milk Addict!! I drink about a gallon of milk every two days myself. I have the fondest memories of being delivered Milk when we were little. If I remember correctly it was delivered in glass then. At some point they switched to paper (or maybe it's cardboard?). I LOVE THE TASTE OF MILK FROM PAPER (or is it cardboard.......at any rate, the little ones you get at school). I'm going to the store on the way home to pick up two gallons......I might have to buy one gallon in plastic and two half gallons in paper (or is it cardboard, haha).

You should put some contact info for the dairy in the post (even though you have the link), this thing will probably rank pretty high for: milk delivery services in your city on a google search :-)

Naoma - they deliver ice cream seasonally.  It definitely cuts down on those rush trips to the grocery store!  We ALWAYS have milk, eggs and juice in the house - yes, we have had scrambled eggs many a time for dinner!

Duane & Melissa - no, you are not old at all - just recognizing that there is still a need for this service!
