So you have an older home... you are having some leaks when it rains. Well, my buddy says he will pick up a couple of 12 packs of Marble Brewery Pale Ale and we'll get er done this weekend! I say, alright, bring it buddy! He's seen the guys on This Old House doing some roofing, and hell.... he's even seen roofing materials in Home Depot so, let's do this thing!
There is a little science to installing roofing materials. Correctly anyway. I think you have to think like water... hmmm, where will I go? Well, the path of least resistance of course! It is very entertaining to me to see the not so handyman repairs that I sometimes see.
This house wreaked of the not so handyman work. The house had a front facade of a mansard style roof covered with clay tile. But, the tiles were not attached! Most of them anyway. They were merely stacked upon each other, no flashing, you could see the wooden structure exposed under the edges of them. Rotting... rotted. Those tiles will have to come off, luckily they're not attached... and rebuild the framing structure of the roof.
On the back of the house was an addition. Yes.... our inebriated friends were at it again. They built a room with a slanted roof to one side. Again, no flashing! These guys must have been allergic to metal because it was nowhere to be found! Water stains and streaks were everywhere to be found...!!
My advice... just because you have seen someone doing roofing on TV doesn't mean you are qualified to do roofing. Well, it's your house so I guess you can do whatever you like. But, if you don't want to make it worse, and more costly in the long run... consider hiring a qualified roofer to put that new roof on! Pay em now, or pay em later.
