5 Things a REALTOR Should Do Before Leaving the House Every Morning

Real Estate Technology with IXACT Contact Real Estate CRM

Do you spend your mornings battling the alarm clock, struggling to get the kids to school, and rummaging through the closet for something to wear? You’re not alone. Many of us are not necessarily “morning people.” But how a Realtor starts the morning sets the tone for the rest of the day.

You can feel better about your day when you start it out right. Complete them before you leave the house in the morning and set yourself up for success with these 5 simple tasks:

Make your bed.

It’s surprising that something so simple can make such a big impact on your day. Research by Charles Duhigg in his book "The Power of Habit" found that making your bed each morning is correlated with better productivity. It’s also been suggested that making your bed boosts happiness! The idea is that completing this small task makes a person feel more productive first thing in the morning. According to Duhigg, by creating this habit, you’ll help your other positive habits to flourish. He argues that making your bed is essentially a catalyst for other good habits.

Take some deep breaths.

Does the idea of meditating sound a little too airy-fairy to you? That’s ok, you don’t have to spend an hour sitting cross-legged each morning. Morning is often the most stressful time of day for people. Clear your head with a few deep breaths and a few moments of silence before diving into your day. You’ll benefit from even 4-5 minutes of this practice in the morning!

Avoid distractions.

Morning distractions can take on many forms, from hitting the snooze button too many times, to lingering on Facebook longer than you should. Most of us are pressed for time in the morning, so decide to complete all your important tasks before you switch on the TV or log into social media. Spend your time focusing and preparing for a successful day ahead. Social media is part of life as a Realtor, so if you must log in give yourself a timeframe and stick to it.

Reach for the water before the coffee.

This is another tip so simple, you’ll be amazed when you feel the results! Since we don’t drink anything throughout the night, we’re dehydrated in the morning. Instead of reaching for the coffee pot as soon as your feet hit the ground, try a glass of water. Drinking a glass of water in the morning will help you feel more alert, rehydrated, and will kick-start your metabolism for the day. Many high-powered executives swear by drinking lemon water first thing in the morning, and it’s an easy habit to start!

Review the day ahead.

Once your bed is made, you’re hydrated and your mind is clear, it’s time to focus on the day ahead. Check out your to-do’s in the task list of your CRM to see what needs to be done for the day. You will feel more in control of your day thanks to IXACT Contact’s robust calendar and task list. Functioning like your own assistant, you’ll receive automated task and appointment reminder emails to keep you on track. You’ll even receive reminders for when it’s time to reach out and call a contact. A good real estate CRM is key to helping you start your day on the right foot.

Once you’ve gone through these steps, you’re already on your way to a productive and successful day!

Rich Gaasenbeek Really enjoyed your no-nonsense approach to starting the day.  I have to agree with all of your power points and can say that I all of them -- except I don't have IXACT CRM ... but I have a handy To Do List I work from that keeps me on track.

Excellent tips!!   This is the first time I heard #1 make your bed.   You know what they say ... if you do it 26 times, it becomes a habit.  Great early morning tips.

Great post, Rich.  For me it is about a positive routine and these are great suggestions.  I used to make my bed every morning but after reading this I decided to wait a few hours or so.....http://www.today.com/home/scientists-keep-mites-away-leave-your-bed-unmade-every-day-t43496

Making the bed is the first thing I do after rising. It's a task that is completed within minutes and out of the way. I always keep a bottle of water at the ready through the night. If I can get the first few chores completed by 8 a.m. I'm off to a good start. I'm an early riser usually by 6:00 a.m. wAter is always my first and last beverage. Its emails, mls then social media ( 20 minutes for private messages or replies and group announcements (posts).

i'm not crazy about lemon water but when you're used to drinking water often here in the gulf area it's like the norm. Have mixed it up with berries for a different taste also regfreshing. If one likes watermelon whe good and in season (we cut it up into bite size pieces) it's another great refreshing bite in the morning>

Since I have been following a plan very similar I have found I get much more finished up every day. I check my calender 1 hour before I go to bed so I awake with a sense of direction, I do make my bed as soon as I rise, then drink water, followed by coffee and a glance at the morning headlines.  I feel this is important as the people I meet are discussing the headline issues almost every day.

Had to switch to decaf recently -  I wonder if that counts the same as water.

Couldn't agree more with everything on your list!  I just switched to a different CRM as I hadn't read your post.  My new CRM will integrate with my website and I have an IDX so the entire process should be seamless.  Thanks for the post!

Thanks Rich Gaasenbeek.  I have followed your list for years other than remembering to do the deep breathing first thing in the AM.  I try to get it in during the day but do manage some deep breathing (with my eyes open) while driving and trying to de-stress.  It's amazing how calming the mind, calms the soul and helps to focus so much better!

Have a great day!

Good list Rich.  I also enjoyed reading many of the comments.  The lemon water idea has been around a while, and it seems like a good time to try it out.

I'd say I am pretty good about all this except for the water - easy to improve on that, including fresh lemon from our tree! The "make the bed" is a surprise.

I agree 100%.  In the summer I would add spend a few minutes in the garden with my morning coffee as it relaxes me.

Really nice tips and ones I should employ. I struggle with water first so often - and they sit side by side!  All of your points resonate and I shall endeavor to try harder!
