Cleveland Abbe was born in New York City back in 1838 to George and Charlotte. He excelled in mathematics and chemistry attending David B Scott Grammar School. He went on to graduate from the Free Academy with a Bachelor of Arts in 1857. After graduating he tutored mathematics at the Trinity Latin School in New York City. In 1858 he moved to Michigan where he taught engineering as an assistant professor at the University of Michigan.

During the Civil War he tried to join the Union Army, however his poor vision kept him out of the Army. So he went back to school graduating with a Master of Arts in 1860 from City College. During his work he came into contact with William Ferrel who piqued his meteorological curiosity. His first job in astronomy was at the United States Naval Observatory, that is until he was offered the director position at the Cincinnati Observatory in 1868.

Okay there is a lot more I can write about him but not in this forum so can you tell me what he will forever be written in the history books for? Well now you’re in luck he founded the scientific journal Monthly Weather Review in 1872. He developed a system of telegraphic weather reports, daily weather maps and weather forecasts’. When the U.S. established the U.S. Weather Bureau was appointed the first head of the new service and is considered the father of the National Weather Service. He died in 1916 at the age of 77.

This is a fun read James Dray and like Raymond E. Camp I'm wondering if he was just as inaccurate as today's forecasters.
