I am currently working on a design/build project in Chappaqua that includes the installation of radiant heating throughout the house.
Did you know that radiant heat is a sustainable method of heating that can be traced back to ancient times?
Did you know that while radiant heat has been attributed to the Romans, it was first used in Asia as early as 5000 BC?
Do you know that the Romans used a hypocaust system - floors being built upon a series of heating pillars with hot air and smoke from a furnace circulating around these pillars and escaping through a flue in the roof?
Radiant heat has come a long way since the Early Romans. Remember those hot summer days as a kid, coming out of the pool and sprawling out on a towel on the hot cement nearby? Well, that is actually the same principle as radiant heat. This type of heating warms objects like cement, rather than air, providing an even flow of heat so that there are no cold spots that can often be attributed to forced hot air systems. Electric radiant heat systems force energy through a network of heat conductive cables, and the cables are then covered by either tile, wood flooring, or even laminate today.
My clients will be using tile and hardwood throughout the house. Each zone or room is wired to its own thermostat so that the house can be heated on an as needed basis. It was fun for me to check out the job site and see the how these red cables looked on the floor. They reminded me of long red straws that created a labyrinth throughout the rooms!
Obviously, I can't wait to see how the floor that we picked looks over these cables but the technology of radiant heat today is perfect for my clients who are completely remodeling or building a new home. And of course, the beautiful gas fireplace that we've designed is going to add personality to their glow!
