How Radiant - The Heat, That Is!

I am currently working on a design/build project in Chappaqua that includes the installation of radiant heating throughout the house.

Did you know that radiant heat is a sustainable method of heating that can be traced back to ancient times?

Did you know that while radiant heat has been attributed to the Romans, it was first used in Asia as early as 5000 BC?

Do you know that the Romans used a hypocaust system - floors being built upon a series of heating pillars with hot air and smoke from a furnace circulating around these pillars and escaping through a flue in the roof?

Radiant heat has come a long way since the Early Romans.  Remember those hot summer days as a kid, coming out of the pool and sprawling out on a towel on the hot cement nearby? Well, that is actually the same principle as radiant heat. This type of heating warms objects like cement, rather than air, providing an even flow of heat so that there are no cold spots that can often be attributed to forced hot air systems. Electric radiant heat systems force energy through a network of heat conductive cables, and the cables are then covered by either tile, wood flooring, or even laminate today.

My clients will be using tile and hardwood throughout the house. Each zone or room is wired to its own thermostat so that the house can be heated on an as needed basis.  It was fun for me to check out the job site and see the how these red cables looked on the floor.  They reminded me of long red straws that created a labyrinth throughout the rooms!

Obviously, I can't wait to see how the floor that we picked looks over these cables but the technology of radiant heat today is perfect for my clients who are completely remodeling or building a new home.  And of course, the beautiful gas fireplace that we've designed is going to add personality to their glow!

Joanna,

Yes, I did not about the Romans using it.  I saw a show on PBS about it.  Ron's parents had radiant heat in their home's bathrooms, and that home was built in the 50's.  I am looking forward to seeing your finished look, I am certain it will be a wow with your sense of taste and design.  A

I have heard of homes using this innovative and yet not new way as an alternative to forced air and steam Joanna. What a great topic too.

Joanna, I sold land to a couple from Alaska two years ago and when they built their home they had a builder do the framing, and they did the radiant heating throughout the house. It was interesting to see how they did this and added hardwood floors.

That will feel so good on their feet. I want to add this in my baths but my husband talked me out of it. He said I always have socks and slippers on and he is right.

Hi Joanna -- I remember some homes when I was growing up that had radiant heat -- I thought it was kinda cool(pun intended, of course) and I've noticed that is making a bit of a comeback.   Looking forward to seeing the finished product -- I certainly like the impressive fireplace and high vaulted ceilings.

JC~I always learn such interesting things from you about design and the history of it. Anytime NYC comes up, I think of you...and that is often.

Radiant heat was a thought for us, as well with porcelain tile flooring...some days I wished we'd gone that direction, but then our weather isn't as cold as NYC.

Red straws, I could see that as well!

Hi Garreth Wilcock - it is an interesting project and I look forward to bringing you more!

Good afternoon, Rebecca Gaujot, the Go To Realtor® , Debbie Reynolds and Michael Jacobs - I think that radiant heat is definitely getting more and more popular in the northeast, particularly when tile floors are being used - the expense of our cold winters is buffered by this kind of investment, which is not trivial.

Hi there Sheila Anderson and Gayle Rich-Boxman Fishhawk Lake Realtor (503)755-2905 - glad you both stopped by.  If I were to build a house for myself this is the route I would go, but next stop is definitely an apartment and it would not be possible.

My daughter had radiant heat in her previous home where she lived in Europe. It was great on the feet on a cold winter day! But I didn't know the history. What a great ancient secret and it makes so much sense! I'll bet there would be less sickness if homes were built with radiant heat. This a great and very informative post. I enjoyed reading it!

Joanna Cohlan I did not know about the Romans using this type of heat.  It was interesting to learn about radiant heat.  We had an oil burner in our last house in NY and central a/c in an apartment.   In Florida, both heat and a/c run off the same system.
