Last week we discussed what it takes to become a home inspector. This week we introduce you to the steps it takes to become a real estate appraiser. While there is no guarantee you'll be as successful as Jonathan Miller (called the most trusted and quoted person in NY real estate) we will share some starting points to becoming a real estate appraiser.
Step 1. Take the Courses Required to Get a Trainee Appraiser License
The Appraisal industry is managed somewhat differently in each state, however all states require you to start your career as a Trainee Appraiser before becoming a Licensed Residential Appraiser. To become a trainee you need to complete and pass courses designed to provide you a strong base in the principles and procedures of working in the field as a real estate appraiser. Fit Small Business does recommend Kaplan's appraisal education program to get you started.
There is a national minimum for the education of appraiser trainees which is set by the Appraisers Qualification Board. Here are someminimum course work requirements for every state.
- Basic Appraisal Procedures 30 hours
- Basic Appraisal Principles 30 hours
- 15 hours Universal Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice
