Twitter is creating lots of "Real Estate" Tweets.

Twitter............Waste of time?  Tweets, e-Twits, Twhirl, Tweetscan, Tweet-ups what gives?twitter  If you are not a Twitter follower, here is the quick rundown from my prospective.  It's IM on steroids.  Instead of a product like Yahoo messenger where you talk to just your buddies one at a time, everyone who is on Twitter has the potential to see what you have to IM.  Anyone can choose to follow your IMs.  There is a way where you can restrict who follows your tweets, however I have not found a reason to restrict my tweets as of yet.  Where this is a fun tool is, that you can take a group of friends, colleagues or you and your clients and communicate through 140 character messages and everyone is in the loop simultaneously.

Now is this a factor in the Real Estate industry?  Yesterday evening (PST) I decided to track the words "Real Estate".  Tracking means that Twitter will send you an update anytime anyone on the system uses the words you are tracking.  The text on my phone was going off every 20-30 seconds.  Please keep in mind I began tracking at 4:00pm  PST.  It was too much and I had to untrack "Real Estate".
Glengarry Glen Ross

In Glengarry Glen Ross spirit.....what about the leads? Not sure if it will lead to actual leads, but the information exchange so far has truned me on to some good resources I am already using on my listings, I have found future blog content and I am creating contacts that could be referral sources in either direction.  If you are on Twitter or you are just begining, my Twitter handle is RealtorTed. I monitor Twitter through Twhirl on my desktop, I stopped tracking on my phone as the notification was too frequent.

I'm curious about twitter, but still not convinced. I'd love to hear some ideas about how folks are using it for their real estate business.

Hi Ted,

And, does this generate any business?  I'm not sure what the benefit is?

I am not sure if it will directly generate business.  However if I am following others in the industry and I am exposed to an idea that helps me get a listing sold or a buyer in a house then there is a benefit.  I found through twitter.

Friday I will be going to a Tweet-up with a dozen other RE Twits,  It will be interesting to discuss how it helps each person.

Twitter present a lot of opportunity in my opinion. Though I think that you have to be careful about how you present yourself and your information; in other words, dump the hard sell...just be yourself. The 140 character limit allows you to do just that, be yourself.

Ok, so maybe it won't immediately generate a buyer lead for you but it will allow you to convey whatever message your allowing to present just a little easier. People follow you, converse with your and ultimately get to know you. To date I've seen traffic to my blog via twitter and I've engaged with others on my blog as a result of the twitter traffic. I've gotten to know my followers just a degree more and in social media where messages are crowded, that's an accomplishment.
