San Antonio is a proud US military town. And one of the Alamo city's most historic and famous military outposts is Fort Sam Houston Army Base. The base originated in the 1870's with the dedication of 92 acres but that has grown to 3000 acres at present. Fort Sam is an active base to this very day acting as headquarters for the US Army North. Before 9-11-2001 Fort Sam was open to anyone who wanted to drive through the base but of course, since that tragic terrorist attack access has been monitored and limited.
The Quadrangle is the most famous building on the post and was built in 1876. Some of it is open to the public. And when I have been there I was quite inspired. There are numerous other historic buildings at Fort Sam but not all are available for viewing.
Currently, Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) at Fort Sam is hailed as one of the best patient burn centers in the United States. Texas Governor Abbot was recently treated for his leg burns at BAMC.
The base in addition to all its normal operational features has an exceptionally well maintained veteran's cemetary which remains in use for our nation's veterans. I attended a memorial just a week ago there.
Interesting points about Fort Sam Army Base -
1. It was named for former Texas Governor, US Senator and Republic of Texas President Sam Houston.
2. During WW2 1000 German POW's were held at Fort Sam.
3. Many famous US Army leaders have served at Fort Sam including Arthur MacArthur Jr., John Pershing, Billy Mitchell and Dwight Eisenhower. Eisenhower even met his wife, Mamie, while stationed at Fort Sam.
