And a Cup of Morning Coffee on Your Balcony…

By

If you are reading listings remarks in our MLS about Daytona Beach oceanfront condominiums or condo-hotels, the promise of a cup of morning coffee on your balcony while watching dolphins play is a staple. I am curious whether the listing agents ever lived on the ocean and did what they are preaching.

Well, if this is what you plan on doing when you move here, think twice. You would most probably drastically cut on your coffee consumption, which even might be good for you :)

Dolphins do come and play, and we see them time from time, but if we do not have schools of bait fish by the shoreline, you are not going to see dolphins for days and, maybe, weeks. But what if you do not mind missing dolphins, how about a cup of morning coffee on the balcony?

We are the lucky ones, who live on the ocean. In the morning we go to the ocean for a long swim, so I have plenty of opportunities to watch those relaxed people with a cup of morning coffee on the balcony.

Do you know how many I see?

None…

You would only see people on the balconies in hotels and resorts. Yeah, they are on the balcony often.

Locals – no.

Don’t ask me the reason why, I do not know.

Is it unbearable on the balcony? Too hot. Actually, in the morning - no. Ocean breeze makes it nice, so for the most part of the year weather is not a problem.

But try to say in the listing that there are no balconies, and people would walk away from the deal. Balconies are of paramount importance for the very people, who would then not use them…

Well, who’s talking?

We have a balcony, and no, I do not drink my morning coffee on the balcony. The only time I step out to the balcony is when there is a beautiful sunset over the Halifax River and we have plenty of them. UV filters on the glass distort the color, so I like to see sunsets from the balcony… but no morning coffee.

Go figure…

Jon- we walk along A1A in Delray every morning where there are condos, rentals and hotels.  The only people I see on the balcony drinking coffee are the ones staying at the hotels and rentals.

Funny.  Now, I know I would be on the balcony almost every morning.  I'd also buy a new computer that would work well w/ the glare.

How do I know this?  Because I have loved loved loved the water since I was 3 and we would go to the ocean.  I take a relaxing bath every day.  I bought my place due to the pool.   I used to live on Lake Shore Drive when I was in Chicago and gaze at the lake over coffee everyday.  I had a balcony when I lived in CT and would have coffee there all the time.

But, you are in general correct. I guess it's like a hot tub for most - they almost never use it.  I'm a rarity.  But, you are right 90-95% of the time.  Ironic, isn't it?

Jon, same here in Minnesota with people that have homes on lakes...They seldom get the boats out or go fishing because they are busy I guess.

I love to have coffee on my screened porch. I do bring it on back inside once the day is too warm.  I even have a propane heater for cool days.

Hi Jon - Your post reminds me of other commonly cited amenities that are rarely used by most of the residents. Mary & I are frequently the only ones on the lake most evenings, and our walking trails are a good way to avoid others.

Kathy Streib - cliches are very strong. And agents are using/abusing them often simply because they do not live right on the ocean, do not go to the ocean and do not know it, simply assume.

I once stopped a speech and asked the agent when was the last time he was on the Beach. He thought a moment, and then said it was probably 6 years ago :)

Debbie Gartner - and regular tub, too... We have one, never used. Only shower. Actually, I can't remember when I last time used the tub :)

William Feela - if I never had a boat, I might be tempted to live by the lake, but I doubt that I would become a boater.

But I hear you. I sometimes here watch people coming to the park in the morning, and they sit in the car with windows up and watching the ocean.

Why not get out and smell and feel? I do not know...

Tammy Lankford, - interesting. Everybody loves it... Is it that living in Florida affects the habits?

Dick Greenberg - I had similar experience in Coop-City in the Bronx. 55K-60K residents, and we had a gorgeous paved about a mile long lighted trail lined with trees, and there were benches, and it was never a busy place. You would hardly meet anyone there

Sybil Campbell - that's the point. Do you have any nostalgia for Florida and time you were here? Are things going well for you in Virginia?
