A pilot of a community-based, membership program, The Village at Kentlands, that lets neighbors help neighbors enjoy healthier, safer and happier lives in their own homes is planned for a September launch.

A forum to introduce the community to the Village will take place at the Kentlands Clubhouse, July 18, from7-9 p.m.  All Kentlands residents are invited to learn more about the the planned Village and the plans for the pilot. The forum will also seek residents interested in becoming members of the program and/or who may wish to volunteer.

The Village movement is growing nationwide and has roots in enabling residents to, "age in place," supported by an active network of volunteers.

Although the planned Village at Kentlands will include all ages as volunteers, the program will focus on serving two groups of Kentlands residents-those who are aged 55 and over, and anyone, regardless of age, with special health or physical needs.  There is no fee for participating in the pilot.

The Village at Kentlands has been adopted as a program under the Kentlands Community Foundation (KCF) and  shares its nonprofit 501(c)(3) status.

There was a large crowd for this meeting and the reports were well received. It was interesting to see that a high percentage of the attendees were women in the senior age category.

The National Weather Service has posted a heat advisory for this afternoon for the Baltimore and Washington areas. Heat index values could reach 108. Take great care if you have outdoor activities.
