One of the more scenic places here in the Alamo City is our beautiful and unique Japanese Tea Garden. The Tea Garden orginally founded with the support of Commissioner Ray Lambert continues to be an Alamo city park gem. The Tea Garden was constructed in an old rock quarry (somewhat similar but much smaller than the famed Buchardt Gardens in Victoria, BC ) and is in Breckenridge Park close to Koehler Park and the San Antonio Zoo. Originally the Garden was constructed from July 1917 to May 1018 with prison labor at a cost of $ 7,000. Local residents provided many of the Garden's plants with some local nursery's providing some of the more exotic plant additions. It was revitalized in 2008.
The Japanese Tea Garden includes charming walkways, a large Japanese pogoda, a lily pond, and the Jingu House cafe. There is no charge to visit The Japanese Garden and it is open 365 days a year from dawn to dusk and is handicap accessible. The Garden is a registered Texas Historical Landmark as well as a National Historical Landmark.
