What Do You Know About Solar City Leases?

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

I imagine you probably do not much about Solar City leases unless you sell homes in an area where every home has a Solar City lease. That's because there are many other companies that sell, install and manage solar panels in Sacramento. Solar City is just one of those companies. Plus, Solar City has a variety of programs from which to choose.

In the beginning of solar frenzy, lots of people used to buy their solar panels and reap all of the benefits. They were cheaper, then, too. For example, I tried to get the $6,000 solar install offer from SMUD a few years back, but SMUD claimed my home did not qualify for the program because it was 10% shaded. Good luck trying to find a deal like that today.

Hi Elizabeth -- to go solar or not as well as the method of payment could be an entire series of posts/articles. You have presented some excellent points for people to consider before signing along the dotted line.   You would think they would be more common in SoCal but I recently met my first potential seller who purchased his a number of years ago.

Solar is not really a factor in this market...we did sell a home that had a couple years ago and the fan made it sound it like you were on the runway of an airport !

Solar leases have generated a great deal of negative attention during the course of real estate sales recently.  You provide good information with points to consider when purchasing a home with a solar lease in place.  My electric bill was $83.00 last month.  Not bad.  I have a small home, and trees.
