Tech Jobs

The article, "U.S. Cities with Growing Tech Presence Lure Skilled, Educated Millennial Workforce", from www.worldpropertyjournal.com, reports that according to CBRE Group, Inc.’s annual report Scoring Tech Talent — which ranks 50 U.S. and Canadian markets according to their ability to attract and grow tech talent, San Francisco remains the nation’s leading tech market, but the competition for talent is getting tougher as more highly skilled tech workers–especially millennials–are flocking to cities where the cost of living is lower and tech jobs are plentiful.

In their quest for highly skilled talent and for lower cost of doing business, both new and expanding companies are establishing footprints in these more affordable markets–including Nashville, Charlotte, Tampa, Seattle and Phoenix–leading to a rise in demand for office space and a decrease in office vacancy.

Small markets took dominant positions on the list of top “momentum markets,” which ranks cities based on tech talent growth rates between 2010 and 2015.

The top 10-ranked momentum markets and their associated tech talent growth rates were:

1.Charlotte, NC 74.7%

2.Nashville, TN 67.9%

3.SF Bay Area, CA 61.5%

4.Baltimore, MD 61.4%

5.Oklahoma City, OK 59.0%

6.Phoenix, AZ 58.1%

7.Austin, TX 51.8%

8.Tampa, FL 50.9%

9.Seattle, WA 50.2%

10.Vancouver, BC 50.1%

The article, "Phoenix ranking higher on software engineering employment list", from the Phoenix Business Journal, reports that software engineers working in Phoenix are getting more bang for their buck compared to workers in other cities, according to a study by Glassdoor, a jobs and recruiting website. Analysts determined a software engineer’s “real adjusted salary” by comparing the median base salary to a resident’s cost of living in different cities around the nation.

Two Arizona cities made the top 25 highest-paying city list: Phoenix and Tucson. Software engineers working in Phoenix, which has an average cost of living that is 1.4 percent less than the national average, bring home $87,997 a year. This placed the city 14th in the national ranking for highest-paying markets.

“The tech industry is starting to get hot here in Arizona,” said Steven Zylstra, president and CEO of the Arizona Technology Council. Zylstra continued on to say Phoenix is an emerging city for the booming industry, adding that Arizona’s lower cost of living makes Phoenix a more favorable place to live compared to other high-paying and high cost towns such as Boston and San Jose, California. “The quality of life is much better (in Arizona),” Zylstra said.
