Social media and my business

By
Real Estate Agent with John L. Scott Sp34627

I am a scientist by training and have been using computers my whole life of 54 years.  I used to be pretty tech savvy before they developed the word networking.  I graduated from computers the size of buildings to the tiny computer that I call my phone.  As soon as I had my first listing I purchased a website.  I let a the professionals at Tourre Real Estate develop my website.  Then my kids showed me Facebook.  I was in love.  I started my blog here at active rain in January 2008.  Here is a link to my first blog article.

I have been off and on about blogging but it is good discipline and I get great ideas.   Because I blogged about short sales I had some short sale listings.  You could have knocked me over with a feather when I had my someone called because they saw my blog. I became very good at short sales.

My frustration about short sales led me to become political.  I ran for federal office in 2008.  While running I took classes designed for candidates and their staffers.  They talked about how social media could enhance the campaign.  I started using my Facebook page for politics.  My campaign had its own page and I personally talked about my race.   My race took away a lot of natural shyness.  I lost but did earn 84,000 votes.

After the race I had some health issues and really got back into real estate full time in 2010.  I became an expert at distressed housing.   I knew how to bid on the properties and I knew what banks would and would not do.  For several years I only sold distressed property to buyers.   So I blogged about that and posted about that.  I also had some rentals.  If I had a listing or a rental I talked about it on my Facebook (and listings on my blogs).  People have hired me because of my Facebook.

In 2011 I talked to my web designer about linking everything together and maybe having a Facebook page.  It seemed like a good idea.  Not all my clients are Democrats.  He designed a cool Facebook page.

Things became slow for me this year.  I took a good hard look.   I am blogging  again and my Facebook page is updated.  The next thing I need to do is take a good look at my presentation.

I have succeeded with Facebook.  I have mixture of  real estate, family and politics.  For most of us I would leave off the politics.   But most of us haven't run for the House of Representatives.

To enter the social media contest I need to enter a link.  So here it is.  Link to contest.

Sadly, I find social media to be more of a toy than a serious branch of my business

You have quite a stunt running for office. 84,000 votes are not bad.

Thanks for your participation of this contest.

Gets the job done!

It was not a stunt.  I was the nominee of the democratic party for the second district in Idaho.    It was a sacrificial race.

Hi Debbie Holmes ,  You have had quite a career, especially in the computer world. I  am still adapting and trying to keep up with all the new additions and changes to Social Media.

I understand.  It was while in grad school I fell behind though.

Social media can be both time consuming and a boon.  The key is in finding the right formula that works for you and taking full advantage of that outlet.  Good Luck going forward
