Wellington has always been known as the "Winter Equestrian Capital of the World". Each winter thousands of horses and their owners come to Wellington to participate in the Winter Equestrian Festival and the International Polo Tournaments.
Wellington is a small town with a population of under 60,000 and some say it is less than that if it were not for annexing from some outliers who wanted to have the name, "Wellington", as their address.
Wellington is located about 14 miles from the beach and the world famous Worth Avenue with is the east coast version of Rodeo Drive in L.A.
We are about one hour northwest of Miami, two hours south of Orlando, and about 15 minutes from Palm Beach.
This litte hidden gem is a popular winter destination for the very wealthy.
Bill Gates bought a home here in Mallet Hill because his daughter competes in the WEF each year. Jennifer is a real equine competitor. She loves to compete and is also skilled and talented.
The home he bought is close to the showgrounds in a small enclave of homes. There are only a few homes in Mallet Hill. It had a gate before he bought his house here but he needed further security so he had the HOA hire guards for the gate.
Then he started to buy the other houses on the street in this small neighborhood. He just paid $38 Million for the houses on his street. He bought 6 houses with their land to total 20 acres.
Lauren Powell Jobs also bought a property here for Steve Job's daughter, Eve who competes in the same events that Jennifer competes in. The Jobs just bought a 3.5 acre equestrian property for $15 Million.
N.Y. Mayor Bloomberg also owns a home here in Wellington and his daughter Georgina Bloomberg competes in WEF.
Bruce Springstein owns another equestrian property here in Wellington and his daughter, Jessica Springstein is a fierce competitor in the Winter Equestrian Festival.
Just for the WEF competitions there are more than 5,000 horses in these events which are worth a total of $500 Million.
The Winter Equestrian Festival is held each year from January to April. It is held at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington. WEF runs for about 12 weeks each year.
Wellington Polo matches include polo players like Prince Harry and other famous people from all over the world.
Even Donald Trump is in on the action as he hosts equine events to showcase the kids and their successes at his Mar-A-Lago property in Palm Beach.
But the biggest stars are not the people but rather the horses. We have an inside joke here... the equestrian riders homes may be a mess but their horse stables are ready to eat off the floor.
The first time I drove through Wellington equestrian community it was hard to distinguish the house from the barns. We have some of the most spectacular barns in the world.
The owners of the horses bring trainers, grooms, vetenarians, and massage therapists with them to Wellington. The horses get first class treatment for both health and beauty. No expense is spared in caring for the horses here.
