Throwback Thursday: Idyllwild California

Idyllwild California

Idyllwild is a small town in the San Jacinto mountains perhaps 2 hours from Carlsbad. It's rather small with lots of locally owned businesses, restaurants and galleries, as well as being a haven for hikers and rock climbers of all levels, from newbies to highly experienced, because of the mountains and numerous trails.

We spent a weekend there 9 years ago to explore this artsy town, do a little hiking, and simply relax. Suicide Rock (below) is a popular hike for those with moderate experience and stamina. Needless to say, we just enjoyed the views and the thought of climbing, rather than the reality!

I'm not a rock climber either, but the bar sounds kinda neat. Could be worth an overnight trip! If you go let m eknow what you think!

We were there in the spring and it was beautiful. It's always fun exploring a new community. I was amazed at how many hikers there were.

I should write a longer post about it and include a few other photos. It's a neat place to escape to in the mountains not all that far from the coast

I thought it was a great little town, and one that you hope changes little over time. It's been 9 years - time to visit again!

Hi Jeff - this is really a rigourous looking moutain.  I guess that is why they call it Suicide Rock.

The terrain is very beautiful.  I think I would pass on the hike as well.

Hi Jeff Dowler CRS ,  I agree with you!  I wouldn't hike up there either.

Jeff,

Very nice scenery at Idyllwind and I am with you I would rather enjoy the natural beauty than try climbing.

Hi Jeff -- I agree with Sheri Sperry - MCNE -- we are so fortunate to be able to have such relatively easy access to the mountains, the desert and the ocean -- it really is a dream location.   I know the Idyllwild Music Festival is a pretty big deal too.

Grant Schneider  - it was pretty impressive looking from our vantage point. My reearch shows the hike to be pretty steep and about 6.7 miles total. Beyond my experience and energy level

Belinda Spillman  - we did some short hikes, and the forests at this time of year (April) were beautiful.

Hello Jeff

I may have been through this area before seeing as VB has been traveling all through the state of California for the last 40 years.

Nice looking place and it looks very relaxing!

The scenery looks nice but the name of the location leaves something to the imagination.

Larry Johnston  - perhaps if I were in a bit better shape and more sell versed in hiking!

Robert Bob Gilbert - the hiking in the woods was beautiful, but time was limited and exploring the town, at the time, seemed more interesting

Michael Jacobs  - I love that about Southern California. Didn;t know about the music festival - I'll have to check that out

Robert Vegas Bob Swetz  - we had a great time, and vowed to get back. Still waiting to do that. Our most recent haunt for getaways, other than LA and SF, has been the desert

Ed Silva  - well I can't disagree. Here's a little history about the name

And now, in doing this, it makes me want to return and spend some time, in the woods and in the town!
