   Friday's Fotos--Metallic Magic in Nature

Metallic Wood Boring Beetle-Gayle Rich-Boxman Copyrighted All Rights Reserved 2016To me, this is a true work of art at its finest. I could easily take this and where it as an accessory with a simple black dress.

BUT! It's a bug.

Darn.

This is a Metallic Wood Boring Beetle, found in logs. In a log home, they can spend years boring their way out of a beautiful large log that might be the exterior of your log home.

One of the many aha moments I have had while attending home inspections for my buyers.

Now, if I could just replicate this and make it into a necklace or a pin, I would be quite happy!

Destructive little guy.  Maybe a metallic monarch would look better on your lapel.

Those are some very nice colors as long as they are not seen in the siding of a home

I can't tell which end does the dirty work Gayle but I imagine the exoskeleton gets highly polished along the way.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel this has all of my favorite jewell tones--I really want to put it to use in some fashionable way!

Yes, Dick Greenberg and they can take 40 years to make their way out, according to my home inspector.

OH,  Belinda Spillman I will have to look that up! I love learning about new creatures that I'm not familiar with.

Yes, but without their dead selves I would never have known they existed in such beautiful arrays of color Ed Silva

Hi Gayle, doesn't even look like a bug, could make a beautiful necklace. Love the colors of this destructive guy.

Hi, Gayle. That is beautiful even if it is a bug.

Do they do much damage in a home or in the forest?

Sharon Lee potent combo--I'm sure we could say that about a lot of things! I like it.

My pleasure, Roy Kelley--never leave home wtihout your camera in hand!

Kristin Johnston, Waukesha County Realtor 414-254-6647 of course you can say that--I thought it was cute/colorful and I'm not a big bug person!

It's right up there with lady bugs for me, Dorie Dillard--although lady bugs have a better rep than this beauty.

Beth Atalay I personally think that fashion designers often get their muses from nature.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD quite often beauty can lead to destruction....!!!

Debbie Laity according to my home inspector, he wasn't so worried about these guys, as they bore OUT of a log, not into one. They make larger holes, but there is something else that makes smaller ones that he would be concerned about, but can't recall what those were. He said that he had one home (himself, I believe) of wood logs since 1972, and was still seeing some coming out and dying. These were the only two we found.

In all that time the inspector still sees these things coming out of his logs. Amazing. They are cool looking little critters.

Yup, Sharon Tara my feelings EXACTLY.

Olga Simoncelli I just might do that, thanks for the idea!!

Gayle, this does look like it could be a piece of jewelry on the page of the Smithsonian Gift Shop catalogue.
