Starting on Thursday, July 28th the best professional golfers in the world will tee off for the 2016 PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield. Players will be practicing at the course Monday through Wednesday and tickets are needed to see the practices.
Baltusrol is rich in history! The club was originally named for Baltus Roll who
once farmed where the club now sits. In the 1890's Louis Keller, publisher of the NY Social Register, bought the 500 acres of land in Springfield. The golf club opened in 1895. Originally only 9 holes, Baltusrol now has 36 holes, the 18 hole Upper and Lower Courses. The courses were designed by famous course designer A.W. Tillinghast.
The Lower Course has been used for the US Open as well as the PGA Championship in the past. In all, with the 2016 PGA Championship, there have been 17 Major tournaments at Baltusrol since 1901.
If you're lucky enough to have tickets to the PGA Championship, you'll find
that you'll have to park quite a ways away.
Here are the choices:
- The main parking lot is at the old Oak Ridge Golf Course, now Oak Ridge Park in Clark. The tournament will be providing complimentary shuttle buses Monday through Wednesday from 6:30am till 8pm. 6am till 8:30pm Thursday and Friday and from 6:30am till 8:30pm on Saturday and Sunday.
- Shuttle buses from all lots leave every 10 minutes for the 20 to 30 minute drive to Baltusrol.
- IF you are driving a Mercedes-Benz there is a Mercedes-Benz Loyalty lot at Union County College in Cranford.
- There are shuttle buses leaving from UCC every 10 minutes for the 10-15 minute ride to Baltusrol.
The golfer that wins the 2016 PGA Championship will earn $1,890,000. To put that in perspective the winner of the 1903 US Open, the first major held at Baltusrol, won a mere $200! When Jack Nicklaus won the US Open in 1967 at Baltusrol he won $30,000; when he won again there in 1980 he took home $55,000!
