Two Salesmen - Two Very Different Impressions Made

By
Home Stager with Sharon Tara Transformations

My husband and I are currently looking to buy a new RV. Our interaction with salesmen has been interesting and inspired this post.

Who we buy our RV from will be a direct result of how we were treated by the salesmen.

Let me say up front that I'm having a difficult time finding something I love because they all pretty much look the same (style and decor) inside.

For whatever reason the trend is very dark fabrics, flooring and cabinets.  It's frustrating that all the manufacturers are offering basically the same thing.

We have met with many salesmen in our RV search, but there are two who made the greatest impression:

Salesman #1

When we first met Ben, he introduced himself and asked our names.

He asked what we were looking for and based on our preferences he showed us several units.

He was not pushy, and even pointed out some negative features in the units he showed us. He laughed and agreed with me when I called some of them "hideous".

He told me not to settle. He said I should keep looking until I find one that I really like.

The day after we saw him, Ben sent an email thanking us for coming in. He attached specs on the two units that we seemed most interested in.

A week later we received an email informing us that he will be getting more inventory in August and he will let us know when the brand we are interested in is there so we can see it.

Salesman #2

I don't know the salesman's name because he never told it to us.

He never asked our names.

He spent time on his phone discussing baseball scores while he was with us.

I told him I wasn't too happy with dark decor and was hoping for something lighter. He said he only had ONE unit that wasn't dark.

It was dark and not the size we were looking for and we asked to see others. He said everything was going to look dark that day because it was cloudy and maybe we should be looking on a sunny day.

I explained that it wasn't the lighting inside, but the fabric and flooring I was talking about being "dark".

He showed us another unit that wasn't right for us and again stated that it would be brighter inside on a sunny day.

I asked if we could see anything else and he said they were all going to be too dark because of the weather.

His lack of understanding regarding the whole "dark" thing was very frustrating.

He made a comment about me being "difficult to please ".

After showing us only TWO units he said to my husband "you have my sympathy with this one! ".

Two Salesmen.

One very positive lasing impression made.

One very negative lasting impression made.

Three guesses who we are going to call when we are ready to buy?

We have decided on the brand we want and it's just a matter of deciding which model/size we are going to get.

Ben will be getting our business.

The owner of the company that "nameless"  works for will be getting a letter explaining exactly why we did not purchase from him.

Update 8/5/16:  We saw Ben last night and put down a deposit.  We got a deposit on our boat this week and if all goes well next week it will be sold and we can get our new RV!

My jaw is dropping in response to "salesperson" two. Glad to see other fields have a few creeps :)

I hope you find what you are looking for! I wish I were a water girl, for my husband's sake. It's just not for me.

I love good salemanship and reward it with buying. I run when the saleman is too pushy or doesn't know his product.

Debbie Reynolds  I have no patience for a salesperson who doesn't know the product. If I know more than they do, or suspect they are not being honest with me, I walk away.

Interesting how first impressions and actually listening to the client goes a long way.  We all need to talk less, listen more, and tailor our assistance to fit clients needs.  There's no substitute for good customer service!  And, the fortune is in the follow up!!

Whoa, how does that guy make a living with that attitude. I'd have hauled off on him had he called me difficult. Lucky he had you and not me.

Charles Bradford  Talk less and listen more is very valuable advice!

Karen Fiddler, Broker/Owner   Ordinarily I would have given him a piece of my mind too, but it had been a long frustrating day and this was the last straw for me. I folded.

When we are at work, it's ears on, questions on, client first, or we don't get to be a Ben and close the deal. Self esteem plays into that behavior too. Nameless didn't think much of himself, hence you never stood a chance.

Elyse Berman  Me either. He certainly needs to adjust his attitude.

Thomas J. Nelson, Realtor  That's a great way to put it...I would agree about his self esteem. I hadn't thought of it that way.

I'm also speechless with "nameless" comments. "You have my sympathy"??? Seriously? Derogatory words and attitudes like this do not belong in a salespersons' vocabulary. P.S.: I'd like to tell him like Julia Roberts did in the famous scene in Pretty Woman. "You work on commissions, don't you? Big mistake... HUGE!"

I'm sure he will get his someday. Not going to get my business that's for sure!

I'd think Ben sleeps well at night, knowing he is delivering value to his clients and enjoying his work.  Salesman #2, my thinking is that poor sales is but one of the concerns he has to consider as he tries to fall asleep.

What you didn't point out was how Mr.Tara responded when he was blessed with sympathy; that's surely a rats hole that I'd think he didn't fall into.

Claude Labbe  Mr. Tara was not happy with him either. His reaction was one of surprise.

We are currently working with Ben to purchase our RV. Waiting on the buyers of our boat to finalize the deal so we can move forward.

Jane Chaulklin-Schott  Unfortunately, our boat sale fell through and we had to postpone the trailer purchase. We will get it just as soon as the boat sells, until then we will enjoy the boat a little longer.
