For many years our old Muncipal Auditorium was a major downtown venue for various events. In fact my college graduation ceremony was held at the Muncipal Auditorium. But several years ago it became obvious that the nation's 7th largest city needed a new, larger venue for the performing arts. A city bond issue was passed and thus our old Muncipal Auditorium was transformed into one of the most beautiful, state of the art performing venues in the country becoming -- The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. The Tobin center named after one of the Alamo city's major benefactors features the HEB performance hall with seating for 1738 plus a 295 seat studio theatre. The Tobin Center hosts the San Antonio Symphony, Opera San Antonio, the Chamber Orchestra of San Antonio, Ballet San Antonio, the Children's Chorus of San Antonio and the San Antonio Chamber Choir. A variety of entertainers such as Vicki Carr, Jeff Foxworthy, the B-52s, Il Divo, Pink Martini, Dolly Parton, Culture Club, Martini McBride, and Clint Black have performed or are scheduled to perform there as well as many others. It is a great joy for San Antonio to have such a beautiful venue to showcase popular local and national artists and entertainers. And the beautiful building matches the excellent entertainers that it showcases.
