Wordless Wednesday: The Wonderful World & Colors of Roses!

We both love roses.  When we lived in Los Angeles, we had a rose garden with 150 bushes.  Ron and I took care of each one of them.  In Napa, my collection grew to 50 bushes by the time we moved down here.  I gave them all to a friend who planted them in her Yountville home garden.

A true poet does not bother to be poetical. Nor does a nursery gardener scent his roses.   Jean Cocteau

Truths and roses have thorns about them.   Henry David Thoreau

There is nothing more difficult for a truly creative painter than to paint a rose, because before he can do so he has first to forget all the roses that were ever painted.    Henri Matisse

Happy Wednesday!

Who doesn't love roses, Ron and Alexandra Seigel ? I recall my paternal grandfather was a whiz in the garden and hios first love for flowers was his red rose bush in his front yard.

We have only one rose bush. I'm not much on gardening....never really had much luck at it. My thumb just isn't green enough. LOL

Simply gorgeous! I admire the fact that you took care of your roses yourselves - I do as well, but if truth be told, hate to trim them - come out quite scratched up.

Olga Simoncelli  mentions trimming them. I need some advice. Ours bloomed and now it's just a dead mess where the roses used to be. Am I supposed to be trimming them off after they die???

Sharon Tara , Olga Simoncelli and Beth Atalay one of the reasons I like roses is that they are easy to care for.

#1.  You need heavy duty gloves and good pruner.  I have leather gloves and any nursery can show the right pruners.

#2.  You prune dead roses asap, so that they don't go making rose hips (little round balls),  When you prune you cut it on a diagonal always just above a  five leaves.  Five leaves push out new growth and flowers.

#3.  Think of air circulation, and think vase shaped.  You have to trim all the crossing branches and leave them room to breathe and let the air circulate.  The same principle applies to trees.  If there is no circulation pests jump in as does disease.

In the winter both in CA and in cold climate you prune them down and remove all leaves to allow the plant to sleep and build better roots. I hope this helps all of you.   A

Nina Hollander I love the roses in Paris.  Those really tall ones.  One time Ron surprised me with some sterling silver ones (pale purple) that have a wonderful scent.  They were in the room when we checked in...A

Oh my gosh... I remember those. I love those roses. I used to buy roses every Friday afternoon when I lived in Paris and put them all around the house.

Ron and Alexandra- roses have a special place in my heart...I would walk with my grandmother in the garden as she cared for her roses. She especially like her tea roses.  Then, she would show me where to trim the.  Love your photos.
