ACTIVE SHOOTER EMERGENCY RESPONSE TRAINING

Last night I had the opportunity to hear some solid information on Active Shooter Emergency Response Training (A.S.E.R.T.).  This approximately 1 hour seminar was certainly an eye opener. Ryan the speaker is a representative of Espada services. In this blog I am just going to highlight some points that I thought were significant from Ryan's presentation last night.

The first point he made is that police responses are averaging 3 minutes nationally in situations like these. And sadly most active shooters know this and this is why they seem to be going in and getting out now in around 2 minutes or so. So Espada recommends this course of action -  1. Avoid (Move or Get as far away from any danger as quickly as you can.)   2. Deny  (Create Barriors, Block passages, block doors -  do anything you can to buy you more time and slow down the threat getting to you.) and 3. Defend ( Be Aggressive - Make a plan and be completely committed to your plan and the subsequent actions. When a life or death situation occurs Ryan says you can not be passive.)

Other great suggestions from Ryan - if you are in 2 story building breaking a leg is far better than being killed. One specific example he mentioned were the school children in Connecticut who in one room laid flat on the floor and held the door closed with their feet from the shooter. The shooter tried to push in and when he was unable to get in then shot throught the door but since the children were laying flat on the floor still pushing and the shooter shot through the door at mid range none of those children were shot.

And he also noted it is far easier to break a window at its corrners than in the middle where it is strongest.

To sum it up If can get away absolutely do so but if you are unable to do so then do anything you can can to buy time for the police to arrive and finally if you are directly facing a life threatening direct assault  then fight back giving it everything you have.    Ryan says " What You Do Matters."

Clark, this is an excellent introduction to hopefully keep assailants at bay and also possibly save your life in the event of an active shooter event. Not what I necessarily want to read, however, survival warrants its need.

Unpleasant topic but great summary. And if there are numerous people in a room/area/etc. where a shooter enters, EVERYONE needs to get on board with the defend. It is typically recommended that anything and everything in reach is thrown at the assailant. No one wants to get hit in the face with a book or coffee mug. Distractions and pain let someone or people make the move to disarm the attacker.

I know I always have a plan when I'm in a public place, particularly when I was a college student in giant lecture halls. Can't be too prepared.
